Im pretty certain it's a short action. The Savage short action mags that I've dealt with will hold a 3" long cartridge without mods though. Some will go up to 3.1

The blind stagger feed mags on the older savages will take right to the 3" length as well. Had an older 300WSM that came with a short action from factory.
