Greetings from Butte MT! First post here, I'm a rookie shooter looking to go on my first Elk hunt Nov 15-22. Having not been before I was hoping to sign up with an outfitter but it seems they are all booked. Does anyone have leads on an outfitter willing to take a rookie? If not, my 2nd thought was to hook up with a few members to go with.... Like to stay in Montana though but open to suggestions. I'm shooting a Dakota 7mm mag and would appreciate helpful feedback.
Thank you RC

I've checked with several outfitters who say they've been booked since last March, lesson learned. As for location, I'd like to stay in Montana.

It would just help to know who you've contacted so that we don't recommend the same people.

What is your budget?

You might check with Scott and Sandy Sallee, or Black Mountain Outfitters out of Emigrant Montana..
I talked to them a couple weeks ago and they had an opening for the 1st season Rifle Hunt, starting in a couple days I think...

We will be with them the second week, Sept 21-28.
First class outfit...and here is the contact, and Good luck..

Check with Ivory Horn Outfitting out of the Harlowton area:

I've hunted in the Emigrant area in 2007 and 2009. The herd there has been hit very hard by the wolf population, and I understand that current regulations are for branch antlered bulls only (no spikes, no cows). We enjoyed our time there very much, but would not go back until the wolves are under control. That might not be untiil my college age son is a grandfather...

The area 314 which is west of the yellowstone river you can kill a bull or cow with your general season tag. For the past four or five years I have killed two elk every year in this area. I typically pass on bulls less then 320 inches, so I often get two cows but I have more then 8 sets of bull elk horns over 330 hanging in the rafters of my shop. There are still elk in paradise valley. The elk around Gardiner are GONE! When I say gone it is compared to the past, but I help friends kill bulls in 313 every year. The days of seeing big mature bulls **** near every day are over. The area which Black mountain ( Scott and Sandy) hunt during general season is north of Paradise valley and is private land, crawling with elk and not much for wolves.
