I have an old Browning A-Bolt that I would like to use the action and bolt and just add a new barrel and stock. It is chambered in 30/06 spr and would like to use that bolt just may in a different caliber.(what calibers could I use)

What barrels and stock companies do you rifle experts suggest I should use and any and all info would be appreciated.

Hi Big J, First let me welcome you to LR Hunting.
My re-barreled Browning is pictured and described on page 2 of this forum
under Rifle Porn... just a small joke for those of us who enjoy semi custom rifles. :D

I found that a McGowan #4 Douglas profile was almost exactly a Browning barrel profile, only heavier. The Browning 'stalker' barrel weighs 2 lbs 8 oz. This #4 weighs 3 lbs 7 oz ...in 7mm, and shoots like a house a fire.

Finding a stock for a Browning A Bolt is the hard part. Stockade Stocks seemed willing to build a synthetic stock for me. Boyd stocks had a laminated stock that would fit. And that's about it. Except for whatever you can find on Fleabay or Gunbroker.

As for future calibers, any long or short action cartridge with a '06 base will work easily. I recommend a 280.

Best of luck with your new build.

McMillan told me they can inlet their A2 and A5 for the A-Bolt short action, if one of those interests you. I'd bet they can do long action, too, but I only asked about short.
