Rifle dilemma

I'm a 7 fan from way back, and it will never let you down. I've done things with a seven mag that I wouldn't have believed possible. It's very versatile, and not hard to load for either. The 7 has my nod, and you already have it!

Tikka is a great gun for the $. .308 and 30-06 are both great classic/simple deer calibers. The .308 will be a little lighter gun being a short action and will kick a little less. Lots of ammo choices. Brass and bullets should be easy to find for both in normal times. Couple other calibers you could look at would be, .243, .260, .270 .280, 7mm-08. Not sexy, but they just work for deer.

Again, thank you all for the wisdom and information. This is my favorite forum because the people are just awesome! To follow up, I ended up finding a tikka t3x super light in .308. It isn't anything fancy, but I am hoping that it will take care of any hunting needs I will ever have and make for a nice mountain rifle if I ever go out west.

Great choice. An easy upgrade for that gun is a after market stock. Several companies make them. Might be an easy way it get it shooting even better groups and might cut a few oz. off.

In all honesty, if I am going for shooting tiny groups I have a tl3 set up in 6 creed. I want something I can have set up and ready to go in the safe. I'll probably shoot less than 10 rounds a year through the rifle once I find a good load for it, but I want to know that bullet is going to hit its mark.

Hey all, it's been a while but I wanted to give an update. I picked up a tikka t3x super light in .308 win and mounted a trijicon tr22 in sports match hto73 rings. Only other modifications are a mountain tactical trigger spring and a bob sled for the mag. This pales in comparison to most of the rifles on here, but for the purpose of shooting white tail out to 300 yards I think this should do the job. It's sitting at just under 7.5lbs ready to hunt.

Good choice. For deer I shoot a Tikka T3 with a Weaver Grand Slam and DNZ rings and base. It's a 7-08. I am very happy with it. It's killed every deer I shoot at.
