I'm looking to build a 700 in short action. I love my 308 and won't mind getting another if that's the best option. I plan on hunting deer and pigs out to 600 yards max. I'm sure a 308 will do the trick, but i was wondering about the 300WSM. I would like a heavy contour barrel on the gun, and for it to be magazine fed. If y'all think i should stay with 308 what ammo would you recommend? I've been using 168's, but 200 yards was my max distance. Do you think 175 federal gold medal would be good for 4-600 or should I go heavier??

168 Nosler Ballistic Tip would be perfect for what you would like to do. 168/178 Amax or BTHP should do nicely also. The 300wsm is a good round, but to 600 yes for what you want to hunt, the 308 will do.

I shoot a 300 wsm often at the same time as my .308 win loaded with the same bullet. Berger 175 gr hunting VLD. At 600 hundred yards the 300 will really shine over the .308.

3.3 mil dial up on the 300 vs. 4.5 on the 308. 73" of drop vs 98". I find the 300 wsm to be pretty easy on the shoulder and getting older I dont like big recoil. These are only 175's and I'm not kicking them out as hard as some but the accuracy is great so I stay with it. If your shooting out to 600 ya the 308 will do it but the 300 will do it a little better.

Hmmm for deer and hogs I would consider a 260 or a creed. 140 pill at 2800 in a 26" barrel is a hammer on that sized game at the distance you have listed. Light recoil, high BC, and easy to load. You can go to a 160 Matrix as well at about 2650 fps with a BC of .680. I like the WSM though, so if you have a hankerin go for it.

How about a 300 RCM? Very interesting cartridge to me. Basically a 30-06 on steroids as far as performance goes.

.308 Win, 55.8 gr H2O
30-06, 67.1 gr H2O
300 RCM, 71.4 gr H2O
300 WSM, 79.3 gr H2O

For any of these my first choice of powder and bullet would 215 Hybrids over RL17. You should be able to reach 600 yds with minimum effective bullet expansion velocity with any of the above... but if it were me, I would opt for the RCM or WSM to have plenty of thump on target and wind bucking capability. Once you start hitting targets @ 600 I'm sure you'll be eager to stretch it out some more.

I HIGHLY recommend you do NOT use a short action for the build as you will not be able to efficiently seat long high BC bullets for a repeater.

Check out the Curtis action.

Good shooting!

As was said, if you got an itch then scratch it. Build it man.:D

As for R700 short action and 300WSM, well. I've been the short action route. Single feed suites it best with my throating. The rifle, a Wby VG1 shoots upto 208AMAX very very well.

IIWM, I'd go with an action that can feed cartridges with the bullet seated much further out. Savage or Long Action: R700 or Wby or Howa or...... I am waiting for my long action VG so I can move the barrel over and make some mag adjustments and mag feed longies.

I used a Sendero profile barrel at 28"
