I expect the engineers that developed that machinery weren't told "You've got 30 days to have a design to go to production."
It was designed by DuPont Engineers so I will bet they used their entire engineering resources to design for longevity and high production. Their philosophy would be normal for a chemical company plus they were knee deep into smokeless powder!

Today? Production lifespan is in CEO timeline. Bottom line versus production efficiency is primary objective.
