Ok guys, simple question not looking for short, easy answer. Help a FNG out with some advice so I don't waste hard earned money.

Looking at a first quality long range gun.
1. Rem 700 5r as is one choice

2. Savage

3. Sig 3000

Is the rem 5r all its cracked up to be? No offence to 5r owners.

Would savage be better? Sig is is nice but a little on the spendy side. But nice.

Caliber will be 308, mainly punching paper/steel, don't hunt a lot but don't mind the extra weight so that's a non issue. Looking for a good, solid, quality platform that I can start with and build and has some room to grow. Been firing a 1903a3 for years and now have the opportunity to upgrade to something a little more comfortable and let the ol' Springfield rest.

Thanks in advance for any and all.

Unless you have your own machine shop, savage is the easy way to go.

That 308 is going to last a long time before it needs a barrel. Chances are he'll upgrade the trigger, bolt, or maybe the stock long before even considering a re-barrel. Even then the re-barrel job is easy. Pick a barrel and take to gunsmith. Doesn't get any easier than that.

Trust me finding a replacement savage stock can be a pain in the arse. There was no cutting corners for me.... $600 and 6 months later I finally had a stock. Not exactly easy IMO and certainly not "budget". I like my savage but when I work the action of a good remmy or custom its a thorn in my side as to why I ever put so much into that savage. I know the answer, but I don't want to offend anyone. Live and learn... pass it on. Remington.

And if barrel swapping is your thing, Rem-age.
