Reloading powders for .338-06.

Here are a few of my loads.
59.0grs of Big Game or CFE223 with 200gr Accubonds or Silver Ballistic Tips. Those two bullets shoot exactly the same out of my rifle.I'm getting a little over 2800fps standard 338-06.
Another good load was 54.0grs of Varget with 210gr Nosler Partition for a little over 2700fps.I using once fired Winchester 30-06 brass necked up for my cases and I'm using a WLRM Primer.View attachment 144729 View attachment 144730 View attachment 144731
Show off. I am jealous

I love my .338-06 A2.

I'm loading the 200 grain HCSP Hot-Cor at 2900 FPS with 56 grains of Varget. This is a 1/2 MOA load in my rifle.

Another load is the 185 grain Barnes TTSX average 2950 FPS with 55.5 grains of H4895. This is a 1/2 MOA load in my rifle.

I'm using Weatherby brass in both loads and Winchester primers.

This velocity range and these bullets hit the sweet spot in my rifle.

I'm shooting a custom built Remington 700 with a 24" barrel.

I worked up to these loads with no pressure signs.

I would suggest using the Barnes manual for Barnes bullets.

Best of luck to you.

I have been using the .338-06 AI for a couple of years, two trips to Montana and two elk, a cow first year, 5X5 last year. I have been shooting 59gr. RL 15 with the 185 gr TTSX. took cow at 345 yards, bull at 427 yards, neither went over 25 yards. Average 2960fps.

I'm shooting a 255 grain Sledge Hammer from my 338-06. About 2,400 fps over 49.6 grains of Varget.

Why a 255 grain bullet? Just for fun. It's relatively slow, but I suspect is will take down just about anything inside of 300 yards.

Possum Cop,
Perchance are you shooting a WBY Accumark Ultra Lightweight in .338-06 A2?

I have one in .243 Win and found a factory takeoff .338-06 A2 Super Big Game Master barrel to spin on when I shoot the .243 barrel smooth...

Curious to learn more about your experience. Could send PMs.

thanks

I'm shooting a custom Remington 700 made by David Christman out of Delhi, Louisiana. I've been hunting with and shooting this gun since 2005.

Maybe you could, but the 338-06 requires a long action where the 243 is a short action round. If you did I would imagine you would have to shoot it as a single shot and even then it may be hard to get the round in the chamber.

Baldhunter,

The 6 lug WBY Accumark Ultra Lightweights are long actions. Bolt faces are standard .473" (.243, .308, .240 WBY, .25-06, .270, .338-06), that I've seen anyway. My .243 (1999 vintage) feeds fine from the long action
I know where a .270 Winchester chambered Accumark is that I am waiting on for a price drop.
Depending which route I go, the .243 or .270 barrel should spin right off and the .338-06 should spin right on.
Thanks for the cautionary heads-up.

PS, those are some nice groups you are shooting.

I have not looked at the WBY, it sounds interesting. I put a switch lug on my new rifle to change barrels out by hand.

This is a 200 yard shot group from the 185 grain TTSX. I was a minute low from my 100 yard zero the top is a 5 shot group.

My ULW weighs 5.75 pounds empty and bare.
The .338-06 A-square variant came out about the same time ~1999/2000.
It was only listed for a few years.
I stumbled on a factory take-off barrel for the .338 caliber and grabbed it several years ago.
I have Leupold 2.5-8x already in rings to go on top of it when I decide to swap out.
It should be a great LW rig for poking around the Absarokas west of Cody looking for the odd elk and mule deer.
