Rebarreling

I am toying with the idea of rebarreling my Ruger M77 30-06 and have a question.I heard that I can order a barrel with a short chamber,install the barrel,then,usin a chamber reamer and headspace gauges,finish the chamber.Can this be done?

I know that the Ruger is not the best choice for a custom gun,I just like to tinker with things and like a heavy barrel.
