Reading a ladder test

I don't have any h1000, but I'm not scared to try it. I'd love to see some loads with it. I was honestly hoping for 3100-3200 FPS, but N570 isn't going to get me there. At least not with a 26" tube.

On a hot day at a 100 yrds, I won't put too much value in the grouping. Was the barrel cold when you took the first shot? What is the measured distance between the middles of hole 4 and 5?

I don't care about the grouping at all. I just wanted to find a velocity node and do further testing in that. Center to center distance of shots 4 and 5 is .373" I shot 1 fouling shot to warm the barrel before starting.

Personally I shoot 3-4 of the same powder, let the barrel cool. Clean if I'm feeling really motivated (always), move to the next powder and to a different location on the target, shoot 3-4 rounds, rinse and repeat. Shooting in powder groups makes it easier to see trends.

I also shoot at 200 yards. 100 isn't really going to give you a good feel (.20 Beggs was the exception but I still shot it at 200 yards)

Today I did a ladder test with my 338 RUM and N570 powder under 250 grain Berger's. I want to see what the masses suggest that I do next. Here is a picture of the target:

And here are the velocities:
#1 - 98 gr 2957 FPS
#2 - 98.5 gr 2979 FPS
#3 - 99 gr 3014 FPS
#4 - 99.5 gr 3034 FPS
#5 - 100 gr 3034 FPS
#6 - 100.5 gr 3055 FPS
#7 - 101 gr 3066 FPS

I ran into pressure at 101 grains, flattened primer and ejector swipe. I planned on going up to 103.5 grains but had to stop. What would y'all do next? I'm thinking of loading up 5 shot groups of 99.2, 99.5, 99.8, and 100.1 grains and shooting groups to narrow my load down. Then I'll adjust seating depth if need be. Or should I load up 99.7 grains and try that? Let me know if you need any other info to determine where to proceed from here.
In my world you are ready to go big game hunting.

Blackdirt,

I have been shooting the 338 rum since 2002 and have a lot of good recipes. Right now my go to load is 100 gr of RL33 with a 285 Hornady ELDM that runs right at 3000 out of a 26 inch Bartlein Barrel. The same load runs 2930 out of my other gun with a Broughton barrel. 99 grains of RL33 with 300 gr Bergers and Accubonds yields right at 2850 from the bartlein and 2830 from the Broughton.

When breaking in my Barlein barrel, I gained some velocity after around 100 rounds. would love to have some VITN570 to try with my 285's and 300's, and I wonder if it is a little too slow for the 250's. I would try some H-1000 with your 250's and see if you can't gain some speed. I run 97 grs of H-1000 with accubond 225's at around 3250, but I haven't played much with 250's

I totally agree with Remmy on his recommendation. With ladder testing at 500 yards, let the target dictate exactly your final load. Then quit testing and practice for proficiency with this serious, lethal caliber!
