Questions on my 308Win

I have a Remington 700 with 26" bull barrel in 308 Win not sure of the trigger however I really like it so it is not an issue to me . On top is a Vortex Viper PST 6-24

I have a load for it that shoots .367 at 200 yards really easy.
Load data is
168gr Sierra HPBT Match #2200
RamShot Big Game 48.5gr. weight checked twice on every load
Federal brass trimmed to 2.0050" -/+ .0005"
CCI BR2 primer
COL 2.220

My concern is the velocity's I got after 5 shot's here they are
2711, 2709, 2742, 2740, 2721= 2724fps average.
Though very accurate is this slow and would it work for elk and out to what distances

The speed is good. That bullet for elk can suck. Try a hunting bullet.

Well I am not sure because I am not sure of the capabilities of the 308 it's self but if I could guess I would say 100-800yds respectfully if that is not out of its capabilities.
Berger has a 168 gr Match VLD Hunter with a BC of .473 vs the Sierra with a BC of .454 I was just wandering if it would shoot as good with the same load since it is the same weight.

Hornady Interbond, or Nosler Accubond in similar weights.

Elk are tough to penetrate.

The Sirocco would also be an excellent choice behind the two above.

That is if you want one load for everything.

If it were me, I'd step up to the 180's for Elk. Higher SD is going to give you better punch through tough body mass.

As for range with the 160-170 weight class bullets I'd say limit yourself to 450 on elk, 750 on deer.

Move up to 180's and you can safely I'd think go to 600 on Elk and 1,000 on Deer without much trouble as long as you can place the shots properly.

As already said above not a good bullet choice. The Sierra SBT may be a better choice for the 308 win at range.

If you want to turn your 308 into a LR elk hammer you need a bigger bullet.

Try the 200 Sierra game king. It has a good BC and a very low expansion velocity requirement. With double based powders you can get them up pretty fast for a 308 especially with a 26" barrel. I have ran them as high as 2720 with RL17 but use N550 for 2650 FPS.

With 1500 FPS for expansion, a good BC, good velocities, weight and sectional density and the high altitude where elk live you have ranges for elk previously overlooked for when elk and 308 are used in the same sentence.

Had the same question, grayfox gave me some good info, he suggested the nosler ballistic tip in 165gr., has close to the same BC as the Sierra 167 HPBT, I have a deer hunt coming up so I started shooting them , they shoot with in a minute of the Sierras. It was drilled in to us the the Sierras are not hallow points, that the little hallow point is for ballistics, the whole Geneva convention thing, I still wouldn't recommend the Sierra match king for hunting!
