I've spent quite a bit of time practicing field shooting positions in the past couple of years and it certainly paid off on this year's elk hunt. I was able to make a 550yd cross-canyon shot while sitting on a very steep, loose slope and shooting downhill. I am not intentionally a "long range" hunter, but I do want extended range capability when needed and this was my furthest kill.
Rifle Specs: 7SAUM, 155 Hammer Hunter @ 3020fps, Defiance anTi-X, 22" Proof, AG Composites Visigoth, Zeiss V4 4-16x44 in Zeiss Rings, TBAC Ultra 7. All put together by the guys at Sterling Precision.
My favorite setup for sitting/kneeling shooting, and my position for this shot, is shooting sticks in front and my pack in back. Keep in mind, I was backpack hunting, so having a very light support solution that "repurposes" existing gear (trekking poles and my pack) is important.
