Second, what ranges do you expect to shoot these critters at and what are your abilities as well as physical condition?

The first thing that comes to mind is a 300 wsm with a NF 3.5-15x50 scope.

I am new to longrange hunting and would like info on a good caliber and scope. I hunt deer and elk in southeastern British Columbia. Thanks for any advice.

Welcome to the sport,I really like the 300 RUM case for building long range rifles. They
are easy to find and the quality is on the up swing.Buy the best scope you can afford..
I have Leupolds and Weaver that work fairly well.Owning a range finder and ballistics program is probably as important as caliber and rifle-scope combo.
