So I have been thinking about a ultra light hunting rifle build. Here is what I've got so far.
Pierce ti action
Ti recoil lug
Lightest contour barrel still able to flute.
Tally style 30 moa rings (I think) lighter that rail and rings.
Lightest bolt possible
Ti action and ring screws.
I like anything with a pistol grip or thumbhole. So I'm still looking for the lightest one I can find.
I'm thinking bushnell elite 6500 2.5-16 cause. Have one and it's fairly light.
This will be a 6.5 creed with a 22" tube.
I will be using it to carry while hiking and more than likely keeping ranges fairly close 300 yards or so on deer. Only go farther if it will hold a tight group being so light.
Really trying to make the lightest functional rifle I can. How's it looking any suggestions I'm nigh a missing.

Col. Mike Kirby to Sgt. Provo:

You're a heavy weapons specialist.
Not if I can find a light one, sir.

I suggest calling Manners Composite Stocks to ask about Tom's 100% carbon fiber lightweight stocks. They are light and tough.

Hunting Stocks

McMillan has a lighter series also but I like Tom's better.

Regards.

Thanks ya I was looking at those. That's prob what I'll end up I do love a pistol grip cause that is what I am comfortable with but not gonna add lots of extra weight. I'm sure I might find somewhere else to shave weight before its done but I think I'm getting close

What do you think the weight of the rifle will be without scope and rings? Im quite curious what you end up with. I dont think you could go wrong with Pierce. Especially since he's from the mitten also.

Ive been eyeing the Kimber Mountain Ascent in 7mm-08 weighing in at 4lbs 13oz. It comes with a sub moa guarantee also.

It better be less than that. Lol I'm shooting for 4.5 lbs with scope if possible I doubt it. Have no idea what it should end up prob 5.5 lbs? Pretty lofty goals but I am headed to pierce Monday to get this thing rolling. Anything else I can think of will be made in ti or carbon fiber.

You might try MPI in Portland, Oregon. That company seems to be trying to be on the cutting edge of stock and light weight since Lisa, the daughter, took over.

I've got parts coming from a customer to build using the lightest Pierce action made with the Ti bolt, carbon barrel, manners and everything as light as possible and I'm betting we end up in the 8lb range ready to hunt but he's made no compromises. You can drop it but your looking at some serious compromises. Thee lightest quality system I've seen is the Christensen arms summit Ti at just over 6 lbs, carbon fiber mag box and follower even, you could drop a little weight on that system with the Pierce Ti bolt action but your only dropping probably down in the 5.5 range for rifle only. You can drop lower but then your starting into the serious compromises, IMO!

Thanks for the suggestions. I will also be using the ti bolt forgot to add that. I was gonna use the proof carbon barrel but I've been tod several times a light contour is lighter. I will post pics and weight when it's done so everyone has an idea how light we can shoot for. Still looking for more light weight parts.

Just FYSA, Savage makes lightweight rifles; 11/111 (5.5 lbs) and 16/116 (5.65 lbs) in 6.5 CM.

I have the Savage lightweight hunter in .243 & 6.5x284 and both shoot under 3" at 400 yards, the .243 doing it with factory Barnes ammo. I got the .243 thinking I would rebarrel it but didn't need to and like it so much I bought the 6.5. The whole gun probably costs less than the Ti action. For the 300 yards gun you're looking for I don't think you need to spend that much. But if you have it to spend then by all means do so but please post pictures because I would love a titanium gun !

So I should be able to beat those weights with all the ti.

It's hard because you have to leave more meat on a Ti because it's stretchy so you lighten up a steel action as much as possible your ounces away from a Ti. The diameter on the Savage shank is smaller than you'd run on a REM style shouldered shank so there a few more ounces. I can build anything I want but I wish I could buy the ultra lite Savage action!

With folks mentioning brand of rifle, I will mention my Weatherby Mark V six lug with factory stock weighed 5 lb 14 oz. It came with a 24" barrel. I replaced the 24" barrel with a 26" of the same contour. It weighs the same as a 26" Christensen Arms carbon wrap barrel.

I plan on doing it just to see what comes out of it. I will definitely post pics and weights when done. I know I could buy one close in weight but I like odd ball stuff. Kinda just wanna see how light I can get it with the stuff I want. If I can save some weight using ti parts and still have a really light rifle with a thumb hole or pistol grip I will be really happy. Any ideas on lighter parts
