I have a SS Remington 700 action i purchased a good while back, and a newly acquired sendero stock. My thoughts were to have a new custom build on action and stock, and have it chambered for the 280 Ackley IMP. Now I love the 7mm family of rounds and have always had a secret crush on the Ackley version of the 280. I thought this would be the perfect time to build a 280 ackley IMP version of the sendero.

While in the process of collecting other parts needed to send off to my rifle builder, I came accross a Manners T3 for 400 bucks which I couldnt pass up. Only problem is the barrel channel is inletted for the M24 contour. After struggling with whether or not I should pull the trigger on buying it, I decided to purchase the stock. After a lengthy discussion with my smith, I decided to stay with the 280 Ackley IMP but instead of using the Sendero stock, I would order my barrel in a M24 Contour and use the Manners (which he greatly prefers) and continue along with my build.

Now instead of just truing the action and installing barrel with a skim job on the action, things have evolved into truing the action single point method, installing side bolt stop, badger bolt knob, Heavy recoil Lug, and install M16 style extractor. I also ordered my barrel from Krieger in an M24 contour with a 1:9 twist 4 groove which will be chambered for the 280 Ackley IMP and with a finished barrel length of 26 inches.

It will have Willams bottom metal Oberndorf style, badger 20 MOA rail and Badger Rings. All metal cerkoated black. It will be scoped with a nightforce ATACR 5x25x56. What was going to be a 1800 dollar job has so far turned into about a 5600 dollar job. Now to decide on stock color and coating options. I know i want it cerkoted. But what pattern? Any suggestions?

This is fun madness.

You may want to give some thought on an 8.5 twist if you plan on running some of the longer bullets such as the 168 ABLR and up..

According to berger, I shoulf be able to stabilize up to their 180 gn Hunting VLD with the 1:9 twist. I dont anticipate shooting anything heavier than 180gn from this rifle. I will probably try the 150 gn ABLR for hunting whitetails.

Besides the krieger has already been delivered and on its way to the builder.

I shoot 180's and 183's in my 9T brux 280AI. Mine is use for f-class competition and sports a 31"x1.25" barrel. I wanted to use lapua 30-06 brass so I had a reamer ground with a shorter neck to accommodate the lapua brass. The body is exactly the same as a 280AI so I can use off the shelf dies.

Any advice you want to share as to the load you have settled on for your 180 gn..and back to my question on color options for stock coating. Right now I know O.D. green is the primary color I want to stick with but Im unsure if I want to go with a three color GAP or what.

If anyone has a picture of their rig they would like to share, I would like to see them. To give an Idea of what I like, I'll just say Im not into shinny so the flatter and drabber the better. Like I said anything O.D. Green being the primary color is up my ally.

With the RP brass I formed my load with both the 183s and 180's is 60.5gr of H4831 and a CCI 200 primer. Just formed some Lapua brass for it and its a bit thicker so less capacity. The load with that brass is 59.5gr of H4831.

Good to know H4831 is working for you. H4831sc was one of the powders I want to try with the 150gn accubond LR. I also have 4 pounds of reloader 17 I thought of trying with that same bullet. Will see how it all shakes out.

No takers on stock coating suggestions? Seems like a great OP to show off your sticks... hope to see some. Attached is a picture of what i have. I just placed everything inside the stock to get an idea of what it will look like before I sent it off. Can't wait to get it back.

If you are going to put an aftermarket extractor on it I'd suggest the Sako rather than the M-16. With our M4's and M16A2's and 3's the extractor was the most common point of failure.

A big Mauser type claw extractor would be even more preferable but as far as I know that's not an option with a Model 700 action.

Maybe i should discuss that further with my smith...

BriKW,

I have a similar build going on right now as well. It's a 280 AI difference is I went with a Fluted #4 Brux barrel, and a McMillan Hunter stock. I went with a 3 color speckletone finish on my stock, with an olive base, and black and brown speckles. Builder said it should be done, in about 3 weeks. I'm stoked, and can't wait for the final product!

Be sure to let us see the final build. I would be interested in seeing how the whole rifle works with the color you selected.

Thought about O.D. Green and a Black web, but cant commit to it. Thought about O.D. Green with a black punisher skull on the butt, cant commit to that either.

If I dont see something that tickles my fancy, it looks like it will probably be a three color GAP, O.D.green,Coyote Tan, and Black.
