I am having a 6.5x.284norma built and wondering what the best barrel and twist rate would be I will be hunting with the rifle not shooting benchrest. I would like to shoot 140 grain Berger vld bullets and want a medium weight barrel. Any recommendations?

I went with a 24" gain twist Bartlein cut rifled 5R barrel. I think it starts at 8.75 and ends at 8 twist. I really don't remember. I went with their recommendation. The muzzle diameter is .570. I plan on using H4831SC with the 140 Berger VLD. I bought both Lapua and Norma brass and have no shortage of either.

Both of my 6.5x284's and 260 have a 1:8 twist barrel which stabilizes the 140 Bergers very well. I wouldnt go slower than 8.5 twist. My favorite hunting rifle, a 6.5x284 Cooper has a 26", #6 fluted barrel. It can easily achieve 3000FPS, the sweet spot for the 140VLD, carries well, has manageable length, and still has enough weight for 1000+ yard accuracy. The overall weight of the rifle comes in around 10.5 pounds.
