Bought me a new Gun Werks 6.5-284 that was bought in Dec '16 and stayed in his safe...unfired. This gun will shoot anything! 2 shots to check zero on scope. 4 three shot groups with 3 different factory loads, all sub-moa. then loaded up 12 Berger 156 EOL's with same seating depth, four three shot groups, 4 different charges, groups ranged from .136" to .736". Nothing scientific about my loads...didn't do any tests, just breaking in the barrel. Used Bergers data for the loading with Re26.

Well for rl26 and standard loads for 65284 from guys on LRH..
Those are very slow loads for that much powder....
I am around 2950 with 53.8gr rl26 in my 26" sendero lite proof..
And about the same fps with my 24.5" shilen barrel with 55 gr...which I might drop this one down some and see if it responds well....zero at 200yd hits steel with 16.5moa at 875yd....
My new rifle zero at 100yd hits same steel with 16.5moa...0527201321.jpgtop is third shot from old rifle...bottom three from New rifle....after playing with dope numbers....and wind was about 2.5moa(20")...held with wind plex..not dialed..

Yeah, dis-regard load numbers on target...should be 50.0/50.3/50.6/50.9...not 58. Berger gave me a range for Re26 of 49.0/2603 to 53.8/2841. So my numbers seem in the ballpark.

Nosler suggest .050 jump....i had to go longer...shoots well in my new rifle...and my old one shoots well also....

I don't see any good use for the 156 outside of target shooting. I have seen first hand where it doesn't expand in deer when impacts are beyond 600 yards at 2815 launch velocity. Haven't seen one expand yet. The 143 ELD-X is so much more friendly. I think the 147 is even better than the 156. The 2815 muzzle velocity comes with H1000. Single digits ES.(6.5 PRC)

I've always loved the .284 Win case and the original cartridge itself. It's pretty much the old 7.5x55 Swede case in design. It shoots just about any wildcat caliber put on it, one being one of my favorites the 8mm-248 Win... as for powder it very unforgiving with most powder that works in the .30 06 again depending on bullet weight. The 6.5 and the 6mm seem to be two of the goto long-range calibers and the LR wind guys in a match swear by the .30 284 Win. In any case, have fun with your new pipe hitter. Powder; I sure wouldn't overlook H-4350

I'm running 53.7gr rl26 in my 6.5x284. Using peterson 284win brass necked and turned 2980 is my speed and this is on the top end. Lapua brass has more capacity than the peterson for sure as it weighs 20gr less per case. I ran a seating depth test with 156 Eols and out of 8 dif bto everything was sub moa, and half then were half moa or less. Best was 44k off the lands and multiple confirmed 1/4 moa groups. Rifle is a 1300$ Christensen ridgeline.

I have a little Retumbo left....Berger listed RE26 and Retumbo as having the best velocities for the 156. I'd like to try the 6.5-284 for a cow Elk this December...if I get lucky in the draw. Trouble is I also have a fine shooting 28N and a 300 WM for choices?? What to do...??
Sell the 6.5 and the 300 and problem solved. 😀

Those 6.5x284s are naturally accurate IMO. As far as I'm concerned they're more accurate than the 6.5 Creedmoors. However, you pay with the barrel life for the accuracy. Great cartridge overall. And Lapua makes brass for it which is great.

if you have a rifle with a regular length action length you can get 3000 witha 140 nosler AB and that is as good as the 270 win with about 100 meters more range.. thus it is very close to the win 264 which by the way is the best long rang rifle in the world.
