NEW 300 WSM whats the max load on R17?

Hay guys just spent 40 min searching the net, fourms etc for load info. Here is what Im shooting.

300 WSM
R17
208g AMAX
Win Brass

I need a charge weight to start to worry at. I went to 61g of H414 today just to get a feel for the rifle and form some cases.

I have H4350 and got all the info for that but cant find any R17 info over 180g any one got any first hand info?

I have a GAP 300wsm and it loves 63 grains of reloader 17 behind the 208 amax's.

i would start at 61 and work up from there. So far (have not shot but three groups) 63 grains has shot the best for me at just under an inch and 3000fps. Not sure if i want to continue trying this bullet or just stick to the168s that is shooting so good for me. Anyway in my rifle 63 grains there was no sticky bolt lift and primers were slightly flattened. Hope this helps.

Well I have done some playing around. I have gone all the way to 63.8g of R17 in Win cases no pressure signs. All the groups are at about 3" at 200 yards. I'm shooting at mag length and the loads are not compressed. I am going to swap primers and see what happens next.

Fioocci LR primers I will switch to CCI BR2 COAL is 3.018 and thats not from the olgav

Some folks may disagree with me, but you really need a magnum primer with the 300 WSM. Try Win mag primers, that seems to be the go-to primer among 300WSM shooters, myself included.

well u may be correct but i dont use mag primers in anything i will give it a try just for the hell of it if the cci primers dont do what i want

I also want to reload some 200gr accubonds for my 300 wsm. How has your velocity been with RL-17? I reload using win cases and Fed. 215 primers. For a few years now I have been using tsx 180's but I don't like how they perform. Plus they have a rather small B.C. I want something a little heavier.

I have not run the speeds yet. I dont do that till I have the load I want shooting at 200 yards.

According to Richard Mann (writer, Handloader magazine), the traditional high pressure indicators (i.e., crater primers, ejector marks, stickly bolt lift, etc.) are even less reliable when using Reloader 17 - they can be absent even after safe pressures have been greatly exceeded.

He suggests finding IMR 4350 data for the bullet you want to use, and use a RL17 starting load that is 5% below the MIN starting load for the IMR4350 data. Increase charge wieght until you see the traditional high-pressure indicators AND/OR when you are 50-100 fps faster than the max velocity listed the bullet you are using. I tried this suggestion and found that it was in close agreement with Quickload predictions for the bullet I am developing for (i.e., 300 WSM, 180 g TTSX). By the way, 61.0g is the max charge weight that Quickload predicted for a 180 g TTSX.

Hay thats some good info thanks. I will look up what I can but most reloding books I have in my posetion dont go past 180g bullet and in shootind 208g.
