OK here's what I am after,,,

A LR rifle capable for deer to 800 and Elk to 500.. I need thoughs in this respect..

Action
barrel/maker/contour etc. (obvioulsy fluted)
stock (probobly McMillan)
Trigger ( jewell ) no brainer...
and most important Cal.

Heres the catch..

I need the whole outfit with scope and mounts to stay at 10lbs or under BUT.. still be worthy of LR accuracy AND NO wildcats gotta be a cal. maufactured commercially...

This weighed about 8 or 8.5#: Rem 600, Lilja fluted #5 or 6 at 26", brake, .300 WSM, Older Brown Precision glass stock, alum. shroud, Rifle Basix trigger, recoil pad, 6.5-20 X 50 Leu LRT. The goal was a light rifle that would shoot 5 shots in 5" at 500 yards. If I could add 2" to the barrel and let it weigh 10# I'd Consider a bigger .30 cal case. Also, I would go with a 40mm scope. Rifle belongs to a friend.

barrel, - finished 26-28", 7 contour Hart, Lilja or Spencer. Like Spencers myself, and Army SOF found best shooting of all they tested. They just gave him big bucks to expand his shop and build barrels for them for sniper rifles and SR 25s. Mine shoot great and clean up quicker than anything I have seen.

Caliber- 300 weatherby with short throat. Fast, flat with heavy bullets (190-220 gr) but will not beat you to death. Can get factory ammo anywhere. With short throat it should shoot anything under 1 MOA.

Stock- McMillian, pick your pattern, Pillar bed it. No bedding block, if you go the bedding block, then "skim" bed it to reduce torque.

Scope is Leupold 4-14 or 6-20 or Nikon in same with mil dots. Obviously if $ is no issue, then maybe Swarvski or Zeiss. However, not sure the improvement is worth the $ from my experience for what you want. Both of others have good clear glass and mil dots for no clicking of settings.

Pick your bases and rings, but not tactical so no need for tapered or overkill. Almost any good quality will work lapped in.

Should finish up around 9 lbs depending on what you select.

From what I have read, sounds like a Browning A bolt in the 300WSM will fill your bill. A Sako, Savage, Rem 700, Win 70 in 300win mag will do the same thing.

I am guessing that when you mean hunting accurate, you mean 100% hits on a milk jug at max distance with a bullet that will put a quick end to your hunt.

Load up the 300WSM or Win mag with some Hornady SST 165 or 180. Work up an accurate load which should be straight forward, and have at it. I have found the SST's to be as accurate as match bullets...my new bullet of choice.

For a custom job, any US production action will work. Get a reasonable barrel (Midway, Montana Riflemen, ER Shaw through to match guys like Lilja, Hart, Pac Nor, etc) properly installed and chambered (specify a short throat), fit the whole thing to a laminated or composite stock (don't know your build so you will have to try a few for fit) and burn powder. The cal. choice would stay the same.

Stick with a 24" barrel in a standard to heavy sporter contour. Not a big fan of fluting as it is one more thing that can screw up an otherwise great barrel. Remove the weight by turning the barrel. I hope, you are not planning on shooting more then 4 rds at your intended target. If so, a sporter weight barrel is more then stiff enough for the accuracy you seek.

As others have stated, look into a 300 WSM. I got a A-bolt and for a stock rifle and some handloads this combo has become a deadly lighweight compact killer out to 550yards so far for me. As far as bullet preformance at that range, plenty of energy to provide a exit hole with a Balistic tip. I like it. An Elk sized animal would be a no brainer at 500 yards with the proper bullet. Possibly a failsafe or barnes X.

What about a sako trgs from lazzeroni in 7.82 or the 338 version? then all you need is good rings and a 6.5 to 20 50mm Leupold, and a muzzle brake.My friend has one and shoots to 1000yds with it, but they come from sako 1in12 twist so probably no bullets over 200 grains. Did imention to get a muzzle brake? just my thoughts ebb

These numbers are for a slower than actual speed from an identical barrel except for it being a heavy instead of standard Palma taper. Mine chronos @ 3,360 fps. Cauterucio bullets have thick jackets that hold up well.

It actually shoots flatter than a 22-250 in close, & flatter than just about anything else for awhile after that. Recoil is moderate due to slow burning powders & a long barrel. Lead time/TOF is in reality much lower - @ 1.00 to 1K - or about 1/2 that of a .308. Wind drift is particularly less than advertised. The big BC bullets buck the wind even better than you'd think at the high velocity.

I shoot Bob's bullets and can't say enough about them. Superb accuracy and very forgiving. As was mentioned, they do have a thick jacket, very similar to the MK's and Bob told me people are shooting big game with them.

I forgot to mention a story Bob told me about a while back.

It seems a customer of his in Texas was shooting 156s out of a 7mm STW in metallic silhouette matches. After they went downrange, they found the bullets were punching holes completely through the 500 yard steel rams. He was politely asked to refrain from shooting that caliber/ bullet combination on their 'dainty' steel targets!

Although I haven't had a chance to try them on critters yet, the clock's tickin'......

There's NO doubt in my mind that the pills exiting that monster you shoot will take anything under 200lbs up and off it's feet inside 800 yards. I'm glad you didn't add a break,, it may have pushed us off the line too

I was wondering what kind of load you were using for the 7 mm ultra, with the 176 gr. Carto bullets. Im still waiting for mine to get built, but I already have 2,000 of the 176 gr. waiting for it. It will have a 36 inch barrel, and I hope to reach 3,500+ fps. I got alot of H870, WC 872, and AA5010. Thanks for the info. Also got some 130 gr. Carto in 6.5 for my 6.5-284, and compared to the Sierra 140, it shoots alot faster, about one line less on my Nightforce NP3 reticle. Like them alot. Didnt crono them but seems to hit the steel targets at the range 300 yard to 450 yards, alot faster then the 140 Sierras with less drop.
