Hello everyone, first post, been reading on the site for a while, its exactly what I was looking for. My name is Chad, im in the Dallas area.

This is a been over a few times question i know I've read a couple threads already.

Getting my first real custom rifle setup with "stick" and S and S Precision there in the DFW area. Nice people to deal with.
7mm rem mag
jewel trigger
Krieger 1-9 26"
McMillian mountain rifle stock
stiller predator
Plan to shoot 180gr's Elk down to whitetail

We have plenty of rifles in the 400yrd and below category. This rig is gonna be my first 400-1000yrd hunting rig. We hunt elk in the Durango area, and whitetail in South Dakota with friends and family.

Plan on coupling this rifle with a G7 BR2 rangefinder to help maximize our efficiency out of 1000yrds both hunting and practicing paper.

Question:

The scope is proving to be the hardest thing to figure out.... I would like to go adjustable elevation and windage IE tactcal scope, but dang they are HEAVY. I had pretty much though i was ordering a Vortex GEN 2 but worried about the 3lb scope on a mountain rifle....

March scopes looked like the ticket but 5yr warranty on a $2500 scope is behind the times i think IMHO.

I would say $2500 would be my max on a scope. I've read about a vortex PST, Bushnell elites etc. that are both much lighter i believe.

Main thing i guess is since im going all in on the top notch rifle i don't want to short change myself on the scope and shoot myself in the foot there.... I want some very good glass if im running that kind of magnification.

i'd like to stay around the 50mm and 5-25pwr on average.

Any thoughts please. Im hung up on weight, and don't want to go too cheap to marry to this rifle and regret it later...

You might take a look at the Bushnells. They are making at least two tacticools now. One is about 4-18X and the other goes to 21X I think. Your research will show the facts.

Can anyone give me a comparison on the optics of the Viper PST versus the razor generation 2. The PST looks like it might work pretty well as long as the glass is going to be good. The viper and razor appear to be the same except the PST is what they call XD glass where the razor is HD glass. They now have a Razor LH model that's light but only has

Right now we're running leupold VX 3 4.5-14 x 50mm scopes if that gives you guys some comparison. We're happy with these but probably not for long range clarity id say under higher magnification.

Also I have a 20MOA base on this gun as well. I notice the PST has 65MOA adjustment. I want to be able to get out to 1000yrd for sure so might double check if that is enough adjustment.

The viper and the bushnells are in the 750-1000. im not sure im gonna jump up enough in glass for this kind of money. I don't want to throw money away but can't seem to find anything in the 1500-2500 category that's not crazy heavy.

The PST is a 750 dollar scope, that is it and that is all. Have used both own two Gen II razors their is no comparison!

I have been going through the same thing, Chad. There are several great scopes that had some or most of what I was looking for (Nightforce, Leupold, Zeiss, Bushnell, Burris, etc...). The Razor Gen II 3-18x50mm has everything I was looking for in a scope though. The only downside is the weight. I finally decided I'd rather carry an extra pound than do without some of what I wanted in a scope. If I were backpacking in to rough country in high altitude, it would be different for me. But for aoudad and mule deer in Texas (my main focus), I can carry an extra pound or so just fine.

My scope is supposed to be in my hands around the first of April. Between now and then, I'll keep working out - just to make sure I can lift that extra pound or so. :)

When I built a similar rifle, weight was initially a major concern. I ended up going with a Premier Light Tactical in 3-15x50. It was just under 25 ounces (25 ounces was my personally set cap). Amazing glass. I "upgraded" to a new Nightforce ATACR enhanced a while ago for the MOAR-T thin reticle and the extra magnification or else I would have kept it. Glass on the Premier is hands down better than my ATACR. It may be an option for you. You can find them used from 1200-1700 ish. If you go that route, be careful to get a MIL/MIL or MOA/MOA. They made a batch of MIL reticle with MOA turrets that are hard to resell and tough to use.
