Im in the market for a mid range hunting rifle out to 400 yds max. I have two calibers in mind that I cant decide on.

.260 remington shooting the 130-140- vlds
.308 win. shooting the 168-175 vlds

The platform for the .260 would be the Savage Model10/110 hunter max
w/Warne 1-piece base, Burris XTR rings, Vortex Pst 4x16x50, Muscle brake

or.

The platform for the .308 would be the Remington SPS Tactical
w/Warne 1-piece base, Burris XTR rings, Vortex PST 4x16x50, Muscle brake

What would be the ideal out of the two to get for hunting varmint to whitetail for the yardage listed above?

If I were stuck on buy one of the 2 you listed it would be the savage 10 predator hunter max 1 in 260 it has a 24" 8 twist barrel which will work great for 130-140 vlds. The sps tacticals shoot good but with a 20" 12 twist they tend to favor 168grn and lighter. For that distance the 308 is a better choice but for about the same money you may want to look at the savage 10fcp-k which is a 24" 10 twist 308 that is fluted and comes with a muzzle brake and will shoott 175-190grn a lot better and faster than the stubby little sps.

Thanks for the comments. I gues I was under the impression the tactical was a 1-10 twist thats why I was gonna go with the heavy vlds, I guess I should have done a little more research, again thanks for the advice.

The 12 twist will handle the 168-190's just fine. I've been shooting the .308 for the last 3yrs. I will suggest sticking with 168-185 grain bullets. The .308 excels in accuracy with these grain weights. As for which is better, the 260 with 140's will excel to 1000yds. The 140's have a higher BC. I am a .308 fan.
