My son's 2022 SD buck

Great day in Western South Dakota today...my son and I hit the field early this morning and managed to put him on this nice mulie just over a half hour into legal shooting light. He's hunted with me many times before, but the last several years he has lived across the state going to college and working. He's shot deer and antelope, but this is the first mule deer buck he's taken. This past spring, my Uncle passed away and I purchased his favorite rifle. It's a custom Argentine Mauser that has had a Timney trigger and Shilen barrel in .25-06 added. It's a piece of family history, and I'm glad my son was able to use it this year. I know my Uncle would have enjoyed it even more. Now it's time for me to fill MY tag!

FIgured I'd update this post...on the second to last day of season here in SD, having passed on a ton of smaller bucks, I was able to spot and stalk this decent whitetail. Not the big "target buck" I was after, as he kept giving me the slip and mocking me from the neighboring property (see blurry, out-of-focus pic of him).

So when I saw the white tips of this guy's antlers barely sticking above the grass, I decided to take him. I slipped in to within about 125 yards of him before he stood up, and the 180 grain Accubond from my .300 Win Mag sealed the deal. Not the biggest buck I've shot, but a solid buck and a nice split G2. Can't wait to do it again next year!

That's a beautiful rifle and the buck is solid with great mass. Congrats to both of you. SD is on my "bucket list" and I hope to hunt there soon.
