Going for elk next week, in grizzly country so glad it’s a hammer. My hunting buddy is already in the area and seen two grizz so far. Much handier setup now with the 22” barrel

Sweet!! Love that 22" barrel on there. So handy and easy to pack humping up and down elevation.

How much does your rifle weigh bare?

I am getting ready to start getting parts for a similar build.
338 Mega
Tikka t3x
Mesa altitude stock
Bartlein Sendero 9.3tw spiral fluted cut to 22"
TRG-42 mag dbm

It will be my generalist goto rifle 0-800

I want to come in around 9lb with scope. Thinking a 3.5-18x

How much more velocity with the Mega? Has anyone necked up a 338 Mega to 375? Got a Tenacity LA sitting here and want to build either a 338 or a 375. I’m in Canada so might be easier for me to just do a RUM?

Mega will run 2950+
I have a MEGA case with 375 bullet in it. I have it figured to run in a true short action with a mono. Big time bear medicine

Mine scoped is 8 3/4 pounds, with a Leupold vx3i 4.5-14 30 mm tube CDS. Didn’t weigh just the bare rifle. My stock is an HS precision from an LTR, I like that it’s more compact. I do also have a dbm going on next, with a WSM accurate mag. Right now my rounds fit in a standard rem 700 SA mag box at .080 off the lands.

I’d say that would work! How heavy of a bullet are you estimating that velocity? I’d probably shoot a lighter Hammer in the 230-250 gr. Be used for elk out to 600 yds max. May go 338 for ease of loading unless you have formed 375 brass. Would also like a barrel in the 22”-23” range plus brake. My tenacity is a long action so no worry about COAL.

Don't want to derail the thread but if @tim_w wants to pm me I can give you more information on the 338 mega. I have basically the exact setup your wanting to build.

Not sure if you recall but we have spoken over the last 2-3 yrs my ideal setup was a 375 and was waiting till you got the mega in.

The one reason I planned switching to 338 as my first mega build was I figured it would take quite some time to get 375 dies. I can quickly grab a 22" carbon Proof 1-10 as they are in stock at numerous places. Tikka reciever and the rest of the parts just as quickly. But I have had custom dies take over 6 months in recent times. With the 338 you have everything in stock and I have access to Senedro profile 338 9.3tw Bartlein or 9.5tw Brux.

I know a standard wsm necked up to .375 will send a 270gr TSX to 2750 from a 22" barrel using Rel15 in a tuned accuracy node. Given the hardness and strength of ADG brass adding in Sherminizing (blowing the taper out and 40° shoulder) that alone will allow it to hold a good deal more pressure. Add in the extra powder capacity even more so. My guess would be 100-150 fps over the standard wsm load quoted before. Rich is that about what to expect? My estimate given typical efficient increase with increase in caliber bore size is a .375 270gr should reach the same vel as a .338 250gr in 22" barrels i.e 2950.

This WAS an easy decision before I saw the performance of the 338 Mega and ready access dies....Grrrrrrr.

I have a dedicated LR build planned for next yr.... 7mm mega 26"

Hi Tim.....yes the added basal area on the 375 will push a heavier bullet as fast as a smaller bullet with the same capacity in a 338.
The 336 MEGA wth 26" barrel will crowd 3000 with a 250 so I think your 2950 estimate with a 375/270 is pretty reasonable
