Didn't get drawn for my special E/S elk permit but got drawn for special elk "B" tag (004-80).
Good luck on you elk hunt
You lucky you! Congratulations, I'm happy for you!
When is the hunt to know when to be expecting a report. We love reading about all
the members' hunts!
Wish you the best hunt ever!
Indeed I am very lucky ... and hope that I some nice hunting experience to share.
Elk season starts:
Archery: 3 Sep - 16 Oct
Rifle: 22 Oct - 27 Nov
For the back country areas ...
Archery: 3 Sep -14 Sep
Rifle: 15 Sep - 27 Nov
I got skunked on a cow tag but I pulled a bull permit for but it's unlimited so not to big a deal. I hope to pull a doe lope tag but didn't draw the buck. I guess you can win them all
Got my B tag draw!!
Good hunting! Congrats!
For someone that doesn't live in MT what is the difference between the the ELK tags you are speaking of.
Thanks for the info
The elk B license is an antlerless elk license valid during a specific time period and in a particular hunting district or group of districts. It's basically an opportunity to harvest a second elk (antlerless) - general elk + elk B tag. There are over the counter elk b tags for specific hunting areas in a region, i.e elk B tag for 401 only.
The special elk B permit I got can only be obtained by drawing. Only valid
on private and DNRC lands. Not valid on FWP WMAs. Valid in all
Region 4 HDs except HDs 401, 410, 417 and 455.
Hope this helps.
In the area I get my A-9 (b tag) is 314 - 80 and they are usually on sale over the counter late in the season. I am just about sure you have to have been drawn for a current year elk tag or be a Montana resident. This is a great way to get meat in the freezer and hunt all season for that big nasty sausage only shoe string tough bull elk, or another last minute last day cow elk.
Oh ya, the luck of the draw has not been my friend lately. I drew a 700 either sex antelope but no luck on the antelope doe fawn tags. I drew my 313 deckard flats mule deer doe tag, long range mania, with a long standing silly background story saved for a later date. And last but not least my elk b tag. Everything else is a familiar refund check.
After getting lucky the first year and scoring a 6X6 in the Bob Marshall, we have only seen 1 legal elk during the season the past two years in that area. Of course prior to the price increase, drawing 3 years straight as a nonresident was a fortunate feat.
This year we got a lead on a different area and got lucky again...archery tag for 632, the Breaks near Fort Peck. Only about 6 weeks until the hunt, we're pretty excited.
My wife and son drew B tags and all 3 of us have our general elk tags too. Hmmm 5 elk tags, better look into a bigger freezer.. Not really, we will only take 2 or 3 elk as that is all we can eat up by next season..
Awesome tag, I know a bunch of guys that hit that area and do good, it's taken a couple years to figure it out but once you do the picking are gooooood!!! They all pulled cow tags as well, they can shoot 10 elk I think.
The Bob can be harsh unless your with some one who has hunted it most their life, if you find them they can be some old bulls but you'll earn them usually unless you can get on a ranch on the front.
Good luck to ya!
If I do something stupid like last year I'll take one of your hands
