Mountain goat bullet selection.

Shot an Audad at 355 yards (laser rangefinder) while laying on a rock wall basking in the sun.
Put the 140 Ballistic Tip out of 6.5 284 in the wheelhouse where it lay and never moved.
Took a second one quartering in on a downward walk on rock wall. Put another 140 Ballistic Tip from the same 6.5-284 rifle between the front shoulder and neck. His chin hit the ground and he tumbled downhill head over heels for 10-15 yards before laying motionless.
So... I'd say the Ballistic Tip is fine for big goats.

Drawing that tag is AWESOME!! Great time ahead for you.

On the bullet choice, I see it two ways — (1) Berger Classic hunter in 140gr, I use these in my 270 WSM and it is a DRT round at distance on sheep. (2) Goats are tough, would consider an A-frame bullet as an option.

I shot a goat last year on kodiak with my 6.5 PRC and 125g cutting edge Lazer. I'm using the Seekins havoc element with a short barrel so velocity was 3000 FPS. I went with this Bullet to keep velocity and BC up. Goats are big tough critters and my results were excellent (but my guide was honestly concerned about me being under gunned) he was threatening the whole trip to put finishing shots into my goat with his 375.

I also shot a deer. Complete penetration on both and both went a little ways and then piled up (rolling a couple hundred feet) the deer was surprisingly big bodied. Deer was probably only about 100 yards. Goat was 309 yards.

All bullets recommend above will work well, but I would recommend a bonded or all copper bullet to maximize penetration cause their bodies are huge.
If you want to really try to anchor one in place I'd recommend 300 mags + and even then don't count on it anchoring them

It must be my lucky year, I drew a mountain goat tag for my home state of Wyoming! I have heard these goats are hardy animals. I plan on using a 6.5 PRC for this hunt. Just wondering opinions on a good, consistent bullet to use for this hunt?

In stock here: (B.C. = .584) and not finicky with seated depth of bullet.

Clean side of the goat is entrance and bloody side is exit. Exit hole pictured with knife pic

So just about every hunting brand of bullet made has been recommended. Bet your scratching your head even more.???

Pick the one your rifle shoots best and the one you can find enough of to practice with and you will be fine. I used about every bullet made and they all work so happy hunting!!

Congratulations, We have had great results with142 Nosler Long Range Accubonds & 140 Berger, Stay away from the Hornady 143ELDX, we have have bad luck with them blowing up on the side of elk not getting inside the ribs,

The worst bullet failure I've ever experienced by far was a 140 Nosler Balistic tip in a 7mm-08 on a whitetail buck about 25 years ago.
I believe the ballistic tip of old had way to thin a jacket. Many failures like you encountered cause a very needed new design. Today it is a vast improvement from 25 yrs ago.
I forget which Montana hunting journalist wrote about his favorite bullet in his 338
win mag was a 200 plus grain ballistic tip.
My personal choice would be the federal fusion. My 2 Bits.

Great job!! I'm envious. Personal preference but I would go with the 124 gr Hammer Hunter. Very accurate and sure ruined 3 big aoudad rams day. I run mine at 3250 w/ 60.5 gr rl26
