Min amout of knockdown force at 700yrds?

FYI just running the numbers on a 7mm 140 accubond vs a .277 140gr accubond, the numbers favor the .277 if both use a velocity of 3150. If we go to 3186 for the 277 and 3200 for the 7 the numbers still favor the 277with 1814fps and 1023fpe at 820yrds. The 7 @ 820 is 1798fps and 1005fpe. So why not get the most with a 140gr bullet. (all numbers are using Nosler numbers in Hanloads.com ballistic calculator) FYI even if you run the 7mm at noslers max it still comes up 1810fps and 1018fpe.

140gr .277 BC .496 max & 3186 max fps
140gr .844 BC .485 max & 3218 max fps

per Nosler "minimum velocities for reliable expansion 1800fps"

ok - sounds like you're pretty well married to the 270. I'm not at a computer with ballistic software, but try running some numbers for the 7mm 160grain AB (BC .512) and the 7mm Berger 168grain VLD (BC .617). Both of them can be pushed to 3000+ out of a WSM
 
Sounds like a nice build! Since your running a 1-10 twist keep your eyes out for the 169.5 Wildcat bullets, I found a post on the 270AM and Kirby had it at a .740 BC. If you can run them 2900-3000 fps you would have a very nice combo, run the ballistics and you will find some very nice numbers for that combo.
If you run the 7mm with a 168gr Berger the numbers are better, I have seen some real inconsitant and poor bullet performance in a hunting situation with the 7mm that the 270 bullets don't seem suffer from. Just my personal experience.

Now I'm at a computer with Exbal. Here are some interesting numbers....

168VLD @ 3000 has 1986fps and 1470lbs at 700 yards (those are elk killing numbers)

160AB @ 3000 has 1843fps and 1206lbs at 700 yards

Not trying to be argumentative, just want you to understand how the 7mm with heavy bullets really shines over the 270.
 
I understand what you ae saying. I was just trying to find a baseline number for knockdown energy in order to humanely make a quick kill. I thought may 1000lbs of energy would be the min. Would you agree with this. Given we are using quality bullets.

I don't put a lot into #'s I just go by what I see. I've killed deer with small handgun (9mm 40) and I know the #'s aren't there but they work with a well placed shot. Also killed one with 6mm @ about 650lbs of energy.

Little guns 22 6mm 25 are two different creatures at short and long range. Up close you can hammer deer with a well placed fast small cal. with a quick open bullet (NBT) At long range talking "humanely make a quick kill" bigger and faster is my choice. If I can pull the high shoulder shot with my 300WSM deer go bang flop at 600-700. If I'm off my mark they often run end result is a dead deer. When we go out "shooting deer" not hunting we cull a bunch and from what I've seen bigger is better and bigger and faster is even better yet.

200-250 lbs is big most of the stuff I drop is under 150. At 700 yards you dont need a big 7, 300 RUM or 338 but there is no question when you see the difference in a deer hit with one.
 
My current 270WSM load hits 700yrds at 2049.8fps with 1305.9 ft lbs of energy, with 169.5 Wildcat running 2950 your looking at 2114.7fps with 1682.8 ft lbs of energy, now that would put a smile on any 270 lovers face:D
 
Bigngreen those loads sound great, but I can not find any data with results like that. Can you tell me where to start looking for these results.

Even if you run the 169.5gr at 2700fps at muzzle given the weight and BC this load should still have 1676fps and 1057fpe at 1000yrds.

2800fps muzzle velocity results in 1749fps and 1151fpe at 1000yrds.
2900fps muzzle velocity results in 1823fps and 1251fpe at 1000yrds
3000fps muzzle velocity results in 1897fps and 1354fpe at 1000yrds

There isn't to much out there for the 270WSM and the wildcats, I've talked to Paul of wildcat bullets and he was shooting the 169.5's out of a Tikka 1-10 twist with just over 24in of barrel and he was running just over 2900 @max but that was about all he had info wise. In a previous thread Kirby Allen had looked into this and thought 3000fps was possible with the right set up. I'm currently getting the coin together to get a Mcgowen 1-9 twist barrel @ 28in long with the intention of running Wildcat 169.5's out of it, hopefully. The extra barrel should get me there.
I may be beating a dead horse and should just get a barrel set up for Kirby's 270AM but I would prefer to get the WSM to a decent level@ 1000yrds and save my money for a big 338.
I'm shooting a 26in barrel and that helps with the 140's speed and I can take a little more advantage of a case full of slower powder.
