magazine spacer

I have a Savage long action that I would like to use for a .308 build. I friend told me that I could buy a spacer for the mag that would allow a S/A round to function in a L/A. I am looking for the truth and or do ability on this spacer business. If this is bunk then I will swap for or get a S/A. If a reliable modification then does a board sponser carry such a thing?
