its a high year for Grouse numbers up here

we have seen 192 Ruffed n Spruce Grouse

we are above 50% which makes it a great year !!!

.22 LR Rem 597 semi 4x Bushnell American Eagle HP 38gr

head shots only

i live in foothills near Jasper Alberta Canada

see them just off the lease/trails/cutline roads that first 30 yds

when spotting we are in 4X4 low range 1st gear

the moving blind

see a lot more when you look into the forest and not just at it

south facing roads/banks/fields works

i have a foot injury so walking for over 1hr is very painful

just drive by or back up get out and shoot

sometimes u get a runner that makes it a challenge

when u have a half a day or just want to go for a drive

one day this season which is open till Jan 15 we saw 38 grouse

Grouse hunting is fun fun fun

Old Guys love upland hunting

Those are great tips. id like to get more into actual grouse hunting. Most of mine are just by accident while other hunting. The kids are getting old enough now to start some of the warmer weather/easier stuff.

Up until 2015 we had the normal up and downs of grouse.....numbers in the UP of Michigan have only been on the down side and look to never go up because of wolf numbers are on the up swing....
I remember before 2015 shooting minimum of a 100 birds during the very long season from September 15- November 14 then December 1-31....many days with a limit of 5 birds....

As dirt mentioned above our grouse population has been on the decline for years here in Pennsylvania. No wolves to blame here but mosquitoes are to blame. West Nile virus is the culprit after a long study. Unfortunate since it's our state bird. There will be no more up years here!

How did your Upland season go Sept 1 2021-2022 Jan 15

Northeastern lower peninsula of Michigan our numbers are way up.
The nest busters, coons skunks opossums and fox are the 4 legged problems.
Late season hunting December or later is a mistake.
But the biggest problem are the avian predators.
