Looking for Load Data guidance for 30 Sherman Magnum with 230 A-Tip & H1000

My 30 Sherman Magnum barrel is ordered and I hope to have it in about a month!!! I'm building this to achieve a personal goal of a 1 mile hit on a 5 gallon bucket as well as doubling as a long range hunting rifle if/when I ever get the opportunity to use it on a long range larger game hunt.

It's going to be a 26" X-Caliber 5R 8 twist minimally headspaced on a Savage 110 with Accutrigger and a 20 MOA rail in an HS Precision stock with the Lapua 338 bottom metal allowing me to utilize the 3.850" 300 winmag/300 PRC magazines ... oh - and an ever important Ross Schuler 4 port brake. 😁

I'll be working up one load for 300 PRC during fire forming / break in / rifle setup and then building up a long range target load for a 1 mile load post fire forming.

I'm needing/looking for feedback from those of you who have been loading for the 30 Sherman Magnum - OR - have Quickload on using the below initial/starting loads ... I'm using the below components primarily because it is what I have and coming up with other is not trivial right now ...

FYI - currently planning to use 1x fired Hornady PRC brass for this ... and my understanding is that the formed brass should have around a 98gr capacity.

Fireforming/Break In (H4831/Hornady 178gr Match and/or 178gr ELD-X ... unless someone has some 212 ELD-X they can spare 😜):
- use the 300 PRC load data from Hornady
- 76 gr of H4831 starting - work up 1gr increments to find ceiling then ladder to accuracy node

Long range target load (H1000/Hornady 230gr A-Tip) post fireforming:
- use the 300 PRC load data from Hornady and start in upper half of the window as low end of window working up from there
- 74 gr of H1000 starting - work up in 1 gr increments to find ceiling then ladder to accuracy node

All the above will be using Federal 215 match primers since that is what I have.

Data I've used to come to the above conclusions include:

300 PRC load data from Hornady shows:
  • 178gr bullet with H4831 69.1-82.5 grains
  • 230gr bullet with H1000 66.9-77.5 grains

300 PRC load data from Hodgdon.com shows:
  • 175gr bullet with H4831 71.5-77.3 grains
  • 230gr bullet with H1000 70.4-75.7 grains

30 Nosler load data from Nosler.com shows:
  • 175gr bullet with H4831 75.0-79.0 grains
  • 220gr bullet with H1000 73.5-77.5 grains

I'm hoping to get to an very accurate load (sub .5 moa) with the 230s at 2900-3000 fps or better for appox 1350 fps on a 1 mile target ... however, ballistics calculations indicate 2600fps at the muzzle with the 230gr A-Tip will keep me supersonic all the way there and I should be WELL above that even without the elusive RL26 or N570 powders.

Any input on starting loads and/or concerns with my approach as outline above would be most appreciated!

Barrel arrived, has been installed, and I fired the first (single) test round tonight for safety/headspace check. First forming load was using a Hornady 178 BTHP over 78g of H4831sc.

No pressure signs (just as expected) and the formed case has nice sharp shoulders just as it should. Water capacity to top of case mouth of the fireformed ADG case is 96.8g.

Rifle with scope and 4 port brake weighs in around 14-14.5 lbs and I was very pleasantly surprised at how light the recoil felt.

Brass has been weight sorted and so now it is time to load up 50 or so forming/breaking in rounds and start getting comfortable with it!
