Long range rifle????

I would suggest reading the 1000's of post in the archives. It ends up with a little chevy vs ford argument but there is a LOT of good solid research archived here.

Your question is kinda like asking what's the best car that will go over 40mph...very broad and so the spectrum of rigs that individuals think is the best past 400 yards could be very varied. You might want to try to narrow the field a bit by specifying additional parameters...if you have any...such as cost, availability, recoil, how far past 400 yards, hunting or paper or both, type of game anything that in your mind is important.

I really like my 7mm STW. It's a helluva round for 400-1200 yards on whitetail deer. It will kill much larger game if you need to as well....elk, bear, moose, caribou, etc.....

I shoot the 160 grain AccuBond, and it is a screamer! Also, one helluva hunting bullet.

7mm mag- i agree with CHAS. it is too general of a question. shoot what past 400 yards? targets; crows?? any budget ??

edit keep it clean and calm, boys

Easy there boys, you want to get nasty, do it over PM's, not the forum. Ford vs Chevy, 300WM vs 7mmRM. They both have good and bad attributes. Play nice or take your ball and go home.

Now back to the topic at hand. For 400yrds or less a 6mm/243 (6x47 Lapua, 243 Winchester, 243AI, 6mm Remington, 6mm-06), 308 Winchester, 7mm-08, or 6.5mm (260 Remington, 260AI, 6.5x55 Swede, 6.5x284 Norma, 6.5-06) of some type would work wonders.

For anything over 400yrds, look at the 6.5mm (260 Remington, 6.5x55 Swede, 6.5x284, 6.5-06), 7mm (7mm-08, 7WSM, 7mmRM, 7SAUM, 280, 280AI, 284 Win), .308 calibers (308 Win, 300WM, 300WSM, 30-06, 300RUM), and 338 (338WM, 338RUM) there are more but for under 1000yrds, they really aren't needed IMHO.

If you want over 800yrds then we need to look into 7mm mags (7mm RM, 7mmRUM, 7WSM, 280AI), 30cal mags (300WSM, 300WM, 300 Weatherby Mag, 300RUM, 30-378 Weatherby), and 338 mags (338 Norma, 338RUM, 338Lapua, 338WM, 338-378 Weatherby, 338 Edge). Hope this helps. Your budget and query will dictate what you want.
