Load Data - 340 WBY

It took a lot longer than I thought to get my gun back, but it is here now and I've started testing loads. Here's the test data from today with temperatures close to 70F. There were no significant pressure signs with any of the loads (only a couple of minor flattened primers). These are one shot velocity measurements at various load increments within the range stated. No accuracy work was done as I'm just trying to determine the maximum load for a given bullet/powder combo in my rifle (please insert all legal disclaimers you have ever seen here )

Barnes 265g TTSX H4831sc: 76.0-78.0 gr 2551-2645 fps
Barnes 265g TTSX H4350: 72.0-74.0 gr 2666-2717 fps
Barnes 265g TTSX RL-19: 78.0-79.0 gr 2623-2658 fps

I'm going to do more tests with the H4350 and RL-19 and possibly RL-17.

Barnes 280g LRX H1000: 80.0-83.0 gr 2452-2535 fps
Barnes 280g LRX IMR 7828ssc: 77.0-79.0 gr 2503-2577fps

I'm not doing any more with the H1000. All loads were compressed and max out the case volume. Plus the velocities were less than the 7828. I'll probably work up a recipe with RL-22 and/or RL-19 for the 280g bullet and see where that goes.

If you would like more accurate data, for a specific powder, weigh a FIRED, empty case from your rifle, then fill that same case with water, all the way till it will not hold anymore. Weigh that. Give me the difference, that is the overall case capacity in water. That can be used to give a more accurate charge recommendation with QL. Running the program only takes a few seconds, so if you need something specific hit me up, happy to assist. Scotty

I finally got the gun and was able to fire some test loads. I've posted that data in this thread. I appreciate the offer to run some data through QL - the H2O capacity is 104.3 gr (empty = 225.3, full = 329.9).

I have just started reloading for a new Weatherby Mark V 340 Weatherby with 26" barrel. My first sighting-in loads were with 250 Barnes TSX FB (3.660 COAL) and 250 Swift A Frame (3.620 COAL). Powder was Reloader 22 and charge weights were 83-85g. Was still getting familiar with the rifle so was not shooting for best group accuracy. Once sighed in was practicing on clay pidgeons at 100 yards and was hitting them well.

Put a 2-7x33mm Leupold VX-R firedot scope on it. Working up loads and practice for shots up to 100 yards in prep for a fall 2014 coastal brown bear hunt.

Powder was Reloader 22 and charge weights were 83-85g. Was still getting familiar with the rifle so was not shooting for best group accuracy. Once sighed in was practicing on clay pidgeons at 100 yards and was hitting them well.

That sounds like some great loads and what a great sounding bear rifle set up. I imagine you'll hammer about any bear walking with either of those combos.

I recently acquired a mark v stainless muzzlebrake. Not fluted. I am going to try to hone in on the factory specifications or the 225 bonded. I dropped a 340 inch bull elk in his tracks. Not a step. At 286yds. Load is moa out of factory box. No custom enhancements to gun. No trigger no extra bedding no lapping etc. Never seen anything like this on an animal of this size. I have a Schmidt and bender PMII I'm gonna put on it. Work a consistent load similar to out of box. And think with some work it is a one hole gun of a bench at 150yds maybe 200. A lot of folks swear by a heavier bullet. But accuracy is always my thoughts 225 or. 275 is effective on anything in north America what shoots best? Will update my findings in fall will be working on this summer.

Does anybody have load data for RL-33? Being developed for large magnums, it has some potential. They post data for the 300 WBY and 338 Lapua. I can extrapolate, but would prefer otherwise. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I got a question has anyone used n560 with a 210gr barnes, my rifle why I don't know will not shoot a group of any untill I shoot a neck sized brass with the 210 ttsx I get sub moa accuratzey, it simply will not shoot a 200gr spire point or 250gr ,
