I have heard some passing comment on the M3 knobs being more desirable than M1 knobs on a Leupold Mark IV tactical scope. Can someone give me an explanation why? Thanks!

I preferr the M1 due to the adjustments. M1's are 1/4moa elevation and M3's are 1/2 moa windage and 1 moa elevation.

I would rather have 1/4 moa personaly. take 800 yards 2 inch adjustment or 8 inches per click?
M2's are 1/2 moa on both the wind and elevation with the low profile of the M3's

I will say the lower profile of the M3 would be nice.

The M3 are more desirable if you want to get from 100yds to 1k really fast, counter sniping, and in some aspect hunting. If you were not interested in getting a pinpoint accuracy but more so a hit with in MOA then the M3 would be a good way to go.

I use an M3 on a lightweight setup.
