Let's see your Varmint rifles !

SW282 -

Howdy !

NE Indiana groundhogs:

This Indiana farm boy lived in the Maumee River valley of NE Allen county for 55yr. Pancake flat, and could see unobstructed to the horizon many spots within 1mi of the farm. I shot " Soybeanus Digestus ", much as I was able.

Shooting my wildcat .22-35 Remington:
Went from using a 2.5 - 8 X B & L first in the 1975...... to a 12X Leupold..... added a 24X Leupold for field trials......... moved on to a 16X Leupold which worked well for me for many years...... upgraded next to a 6.5 X 20X Leupold Vari X III which stayed in-use for even longer....... then on to a brief stint w/ a B & L 32X.... swapped out for a 2X-boosted T36, which works out optically to something like 52X. That scope is now currently mounted to my target/varmint rifle chambered in my " DEEP 6 " wildcat ( case capacity 51.2gr H2O).

Never once said.... " Gee, this is TOO MUCH scope " !

For engagements out to 1,000yd I could keep using a 1" tube. Still......
Once I can finally afford it, I intend to get me one of them 30mm monster ELR scopes; 'cause...... you never know .
Hehh.....hehh.....hehhh !!

357- l could use a bit more power TOO. Maybe a Leupold VX6 7-35 or a Valdada 5.8-40X56..
I have a Trijicon Accupower 5-50x56mm scope and in the summertime, I have to turn the power way down, otherwise heat waves off the ground distort sight picture . Point is high power scopes are great, when conditions are just right.

Iron Worker -

Howdy !

Don't want to hijack the post !

I haven't had problems w/ mirage, really....so far. Guess I haven't been shooting @ stuff far enough away !

I did read about March offering a high magnification scope w/ a zoom feature, that basically gives one a built-in
spotting scope capability. Boy, something like that would sure be handy for shooting in things like 500yd
groundhog & egg shoots ! The same $$$ that I don't have ( yet ) for a high-magnification ELR scope, is the same $$$ I also don't have ( yet ) for a dedicated spotting scope. Hence, the appeal of the something like the March product mentioned.

I think my Trijicon has better glass than the march . Under 2K on Amazon

I just grab 4 or 5 for these along with 300-400 rounds for each. Nothing custom, all factory except for a 20 Pratical in an AR platform. Well, the 338 Lapua likley will never make the trip.

Mine is a Rem 700 223 that started out as one of those cheap ADL Varmints from dicks. It has a timney, a boyds pro varmint stock and a PST gen 2 5-25x50 FFP. Shoots the cheap fiocchi ammo 1/2 moa. Love this gun...has some sentimental value.

This thread is like a HISTORY lesson on varmint rifles and 0ptics over the past decade. .. Reading the first couple pages l noticed in 2010 the MAXIMUM scope was around 20X or so. Looking at the last page of this thread 10 yrs later in 2020 it seems 20X scopes are now the MINIMUM!!
Yeah, I remember 10 years ago when folks on forums were saying that all you needed for long range out to 1000yds was a 10 power. I don't know about all that but 20x plus sure is nice to have.

I'll play along.

One of my Varmint hunting rifles... Springfield Armory M1a, all USGI Winchester parts, Premier Heritage 3-15x50... it's heavy but it's a smooth shooter & quick follow up shots if there are more than one yote!
