Heading out to do chores and have a great opportunity to give the new ML a chance to take a nice boar. Trouble is by the time I could have broken it out, loaded, tamped, primed and been ready to get to stalking he'd moved well out beyond my current comfort zone so I just grabbed my stubby little AR with the EOTEC on it and with two quick pulls of the trigger one dead pig.

What I'd like to do is to start carrying it at the ready so when similar circumstances arise I'm ready and can just pull it out and start the stalk.

Is there any real downside to doing so? Shooting BH20 Scorpion 300g with black crush rib sabot and using regular shotgun primers.

Once loaded and tamped down I should have any issue with loosening or moisture fouling the powder should I?

I have never had a problem keeping my ML loaded (unprimed) for as long as our 2 week season lasts. In the case of damp weather, I will tape the bore, and plug the priming hole to insure no moisture can enter. I have done testing for both clean bore and extended charge testing and found no effects on the accuracy for my hunting requirements. I do keep a an orange sticker on the rifle when it is in a charged state.

I have left my muzzleloaders loaded from 1 season to the next. Never had a problem with it firing,
( now it will bite me in the butt). I always check it before next season. This is not with corrosive powder though. If it don't fire I can always remove the breech plug and get rid of it. Have done it with in lines that don't have removable breach plugs also and not had a problem. They were stored in the safe also.

Thanks guys. Let me correct my post from above and give a little more detail.

It's a CVA Accura nitride loaded with BH 209.

I wouldn't think there's any danger in keeping it primed since the hammer cannot contact it when carried and it will be carried in the truck in a soft case that I can get into quickly if the need arises.

Reading the BH209 literature that comes with it I see no mention of any dangers from corrosion but as usual I figure the go to source would be you guys with a whole lot more ML experience than I have.

Any further input will be appreciated.

I know this is beating a dead horse and EVERYBODY has heard it a thousand times, but I am going to say it again.

If you don't have a "Witness Mark" on your ram rod and you look at it EVERY time you load your ML, if you forgot you left it loaded, and load it AGAIN, when you pull the trigger you are in for one hell of a surprise!!!

Not saying don't leave it loaded, just saying use the Witness Mark, EVERY time.

I think u need a guy in the truck with you who has proven expererience shooting ML.
In fact make it a little Mexican cuz we load fast and you all set.
Shoot I just described me!!!!:D:D:D

Hope to pass through June 10th or so.

Here's the deal........... First know this, BH209 does contain sulfur and potassium, both can corrode. However both are in very minimal amounts. You need to be aware of that.

I would NOT suggest or recommend you leave it primed when its not in your hands and immediate control. Carry a couple primers in your pocket while the rifle is in the truck/quad/etc.

As for BH and leaving it loaded.......... Unless you're in a very humid area, get caught in the rain or, fall in a creek, you can leave the rifle loaded for quite awhile. Remember, primers are non-corrosive so fire a couple primers ONLY before you load your charge of BH and coat the inside of the barrel. I'm in no way saying it won't corrode, what you're attempting to do is to eliminate as many contributing factors as possible. If you get into a humid situation where you may question it, do one of two things. Either clean the rifle and reload it or, just shoot the thing and reload it.

A "Little Mexican" would exclude you!

The kids however qualify... gun)

You can ride in the bed and supervise!
