So I'm about 40 days out from a Aoudad sheep hunt in west Texas and I'm doing what I can to stay in shape with a pretty good work out consisting of 9 (3 sets of 3) 100 yard uphill(run uphill and walk downhill) sprints with a set of 10 push ups between each sprint and a set of flutter kicks every third sprint. So 9 uphill sprints, 100 push ups, 3 sets of flutter kicks in about 25 minutes followed by going up and down that same hill carrying a 45 pound rock 3-4 times over my head so another 20 minutes. Seems to be a pretty good mix of cardio and strength training but...

I don't actually enjoy the above mentioned workout what I actually enjoy is running which is also the only thing that seems to work for weight loss for me. Here's the problem any more than about 2 miles of running and I won't be able walk the next day due to knee pain. So my question is what kind of knee stuff have folks done. I'm only 30 and while I wasn't exactly nice to my knees in my 20s I have a hard time believing they're already gone. I went to the doc once about it and they came up with physical therapy and an appearance that nothing was wrong. What do you guys think? A second opinion? What types of knee surgery have folks gone through? Any info at all?

Before the hunt get a cortisone shot in the knee. Unless they did an MRI on the knee then they are just guessing as to condition. No matter if just orthosvopic or replacement you will not be hunting on that knee in 60 days. I had a total knee replacement 2 years ago and no running anymore and the other knee gets gel and cortisone and until replaced in a year or two

your post is vague in detail about the knee. The advice can be anywhere from don't be a bitc% to you might be acl/pcl reconstruction and in the middle somewhere being you have a ITB syndrome and need to stretch better. I still have a torn acl. Been running on it for years

Good point. The pain is generally in my right knee though I've had more mild pain in the left. Basically it tends to want to stop bending with the pain primarily in the front lower quarter of the knee. Almost feels like on the edge of the knee cap on the bottom outside edge.Guess I wasn't looking for to much deep medical advice since I'll let a doc do that but I was starting to think about what might be ahead of me after my January hunt.

I have problems with my left knee due to a woman hitting it with her car get to the point I hobble around on it if you have ever seen the come racial on TV about osteo bio flex go to Walmart buy some with MSN in it if it is going to help you will know in a week I take 2 pills every night before bed have absolutely no knee pain if I quit taking it in 2 weeks I'm hobbling again far as I'm concerned it is fantastic stuff. Sounds like the illiotibial band. Runners knee. Do you think the left can start hurting if you are over compensating if there is a moderate pain level. That's a blind guess. If it is with any luck, you get the rest and ice it speech + horse pill of Motrin. Maybe some physical therapy. If surgery then I don't think you want all the details of how many weeks and how much physical therapy to recover

Knee pains suck....being in the construction field after playing too hard in sports and destroying my right knee in college football and again in old fat man slow pitch softball...
Rebuilt acl with patella tendon....strong..holds together..but will never not know pain again... glucosamine did absolutely nothing for any pains thru my body...should have bought stock in liquid ibuprofen...takes the swelling away(anti Viagra)....
The stress you are causing going down hill is probably the culprit...putting the pressure into the front portion of the joint...
I jumped on a mtn bike and a road bike this year..logged 225 miles each.....cant run due to lower back.....best shape my legs been in for years....
Take some of the running stress off for a few days...but keep ibu's going thru.....will get you thru the hunt....then its your and your Drs decision as to problem to fix.....maybe it is just a bone spur....you could be so lucky....

Get a proper exam.
Stop running. Swim, row or bike for your aerobics. Warm up before full on activity.
Put weight in a back pack instead of carrying it in an awkward position. Stay on level ground for a couple weeks.
Freeze water in small styrofoam cups. After your workout and shower, score/cut the the styrofoam to expose about 1" of ice. Continually move the ice all over your knee (towel underneath to absorb runoff). Do this for about 5 minutes. Your skin will be red and cold. As long as the ice is moving you will be fine......do not be stupid about this. Self inflicted frostbite is frowned upon.
This will minimize inflammation. The styrofoam insulates and is a comfortable handle. I learned this trick from my PT rehabbing from a shattered patella and torn patella tendon. 6 months 3 x week..
Ibuprofen and whatever anti-inflammatories you can handle are your friend. Pain free exercise. If it hurts, stop.
As a retired architectural blacksmith my professional opinion is your knee issue(s) is more likely tendonitis rather than a major structural thing. If you have not knowingly injured your knee previously, and you being 30, my metalworking background rules out osteoarthritis.
See an orthopedist. If not, call me in the morning.
deepwater

Pttp...
all good info.....other than freezing water use vodka....the water is too cold...and you might as well drink a little.....doesnt help.....but doesnt hurt as bad when you fall down....
