What do you think? Check out these ballistics on a 300gr SMK at 1100 fps:

Range Velocity Energy Momentum Drop
(yards) (ft/sec) (ft-lbs) (lbs-sec) (moa)
0 1101.4 808.0 1.47 ---
100 1062.7 752.3 1.42 -0.0
200 1029.0 705.4 1.37 -14.0
300 999.5 665.4 1.33 -29.1
400 973.3 631.1 1.30 -44.9
500 950.2 601.4 1.27 -61.5

Whaddya think??

No, you smartass!

Your tables don't take the fact that these bullets launched at that velocity will be tumbling end over end (which doesn't help the BC very much

I'm thinking a 30-30 would be a better choice for long range hunting....

Yes, I'm just shootin' you ****! It's fun!

**** Jon, you saw right through that

Here's what stimulated my post:

Boyd Heaton related on another post that his fellow long rangers have killed an elk at 2890 yards, with a .338 300gr MK started at 3350 fps.

Out of curiosity I crunched the numbers with JBM. (had to take the 2000 yards retained velocity, reenter that as MV, and then go to the 890 yd velocity). Anyhow, playing with different elevations and such, it appeared to me that impact velocity at 2890 yards would be betwee 950-1000 fps(assuming bullet stability).

So , being the smartass you mentioned

, I got to thinking about different .338 cartridges, eventually arriving at the .338 Whisper. (which I believe is twisted 1-8).

Boyd says at 2890 yards, the .338 300grMK(started at 3350fps) "took out both shoulders, leaving an exit wound the size of a volleyball".

I'm trying to reconcile all this information in my admittedly thick head

.

It led me to the above post. Half serious, with distinct and deliberate smartass undertones

But seriously hoping for feedback by the LR practitioners around here.

What case is the 338 Whisper on?

I'm thinking about having a 308 Win opened up to 338 and try 300 grain SMKs. I have tons of 308 brass and more showing up every time I practice, thought I'd build a fun gun in 338 and get a suppressor for it.

MM,
I was thining along the same lines just few nights ago. "A quite gun, comparatively compact, long barrel life, yet still haveing 500-600 yard capabilities." As far as penetration goes I do not see that being a problem. If I currently had the funds I think that I would just go with a 50 cal and lob 750gr bullets out there, Although, from what I have read the .338's seem to be producing better accuracy.

In my mind I would rather put a can on a full power 308 win. (I prefer AWC's Thundertrap). Much better tragectory and the sound signature is comparable to my ruger 10/22 rifle.

I made the dummy 338 Whisper (Hornady 250gr) bullet round over a year ago just to see what it looked like. Month ago I purchased a used 338 Whisper Contender barrel.
