Is my Bergara Bergarbage?

Well that turned quickly. That was a joke by the way, I didn't really destroy $4000 worth of stuff or blow it up. Sorry if my joke was only funny to me. Quitting tobacco on the same day as doing my "final test" was pretty miserable and I thought some comic relief would help.

Since Nate got involved I have been defending Bergara regardless of who or what's at fault, so I'm not sure why all of a sudden it's "unfairly targeting Bergara" now. I'm only relaying what info I got from what I have. Once again, thank you Nate, you HAVE gone above and beyond. Regardless of whatever the issue may be you stood out far above what was expected, especially next to NFs customer service.

This thread was massive, but I'm pretty sure in there I did mention I had it checked out by more than one smith. As for saying my handholds were bad...uhh no. Chrono was garbage. My .308s and 5.56 hand loads have been great, and I took far less time and attention to detail making those.

I did try and systematically diagnose as recommended, but tried doing it as cheap as possible without sinking even more money into this mess. For what it's worth today I finally did go out and by a $400 Vortex and new rings, as well as finally finding a sympathetic range employee who let me use an old beat up used Remmington 700 they were selling with my NF.

Once again I can't say anything conclusive but here's what I found. The old used Remington 700 with my NightForce seemed just fine. I used some non match grade ammo and got 0.8-1.3 MOA groups not counting the fliers I felt myself pull.

The Bergara with the new Vortex and rings preformed pretty much the same as the last billion accuracy tests. I really nice group, an ok group, a bad group, and a terrible group. I let the barrel cool as best as I could for an indoor range between groups. I'm not trying to finger point but just hypothesize. Perhaps more than three 3 round groups tested by Bergara would have started opening up. Maybe not. Maybe I just suck at shooting. I really don't know anymore but I've never had this experience with any other rifle/setup other than the times something was confirmed defective by the mfg. The confusing part (and why I think I kept shifting focus on what the culprit was) is that it shoots a nice group, them widen, widen, huge mess, back to nice. So Every time I get a nice group I think I have conclusive evidence but its not. It just seems to yo-yo between group sizes as if the barrel is red hot shotgunning rounds even though it's not. I should have shot far more rounds using the Tasco or any other scope before blaming the optic, but once again at $50 per box this was and is financially draining me and testing large quantities of rounds just hasn't been feasible.

I really don't know and I'm tired of guessing, especially if it sounds like I'm trying to blame everyone. I apologize, but this has sent me near total meltdown trying to figure it out. I'm literally in debt now from trying to figure out a dam rifle that still isn't acceptable for even hunting deer.

Nate has been great. But I wish he wouldn't have sent me a message saying he wishes to refund my money and "part ways" since I surely lost him customers, as I would happily accept a replacement rifle. I really want the HMR to work for me, especially after seeing how much they appear to care, but I'll gladly take a refund and try another company if that's what he wishes.
Glad that was a joke, I'll stop mourning now.
One last stab.......is it possible the front most scope base screw is in a through hole over the barrel/ threads, the screw is a smidge long and touching the barrel /threads causing more pressure as the barrel heats, less pressure as the barrel cools ?

I hate to say it but some guys just can't shoot for a group. All your targets show flyers, even that 223. Maybe you developed a flinch and don't realize it. Go to a range with a buddy that can shoot and also has a rifle that shoots well. You shoot his rifle and let him shoot yours. That will tell you everything you need to know.

I have no idea

Already been down that path. Several people shot of besides myself including an army school trainedSniper who immediately said something wasn't right. His groups were several inches at 100 yards and it 200 yards none even hit paper.

Take the refund.

I will.

Just so happens I have a Remington 700 action and a brand new fluted 30 cal barrel sitting in the shop. Long action can be a 300wsm long throated. A 300winmag or a 300rum. My 300wsm reamer is the one I use for my 1000 yard rifles. I can do the throat any length on it. Just a thought. The last wsm I did for a buddy that is a member on here also shot under 1 inch groups at 300 yards with 208 amaxs and Winchester brass. The 300wsm is one easy cartridge to tune up and are extremely accurate to 1000 yards. Let me know if your interested. I am willing to put the entire rifle together with your scope and develop loads for it so it's turn key for you. Now that I'm retired I have extra time when I'm not fishing.

Shep, can I give you a call? Depending on the price I'm interested. I do want to develop my own load though. I've been looking forward to nerding out and tuning it almost more than shooting.

Let's see pics of the destroyed rifle. If bergara offered me my money back I would have just said yes, perfect. You really can't ask for more than that from any company. If you guys really want to see the most awesome customer service at ant company look at Sweetwater. They sell music related products. They are a big company and every customer is assigned a sales professional. Every time I order anything from them I get a phone call from my guy thanking me and telling me he is there to handle any issues or help with the operation of the products. I would like to see companies in our industry emulate this level of customer service. It does appear that Bergara did everything they could to appease the op. Especially after finding out that he was offered a refund. None of us will ever know what the real problem was now. I wish he would of sent the rifle to one of us custom Smith's on here to go over it and do our own troubleshooting. I don't any smith that only has a Tasco for a test scope. What's he work on Red Ryder's. I have back up rifles and scopes for my past customers to use at any time even now that I'm retired I still back up all my customs I put out. Thanks to Nate for coming on here and telling his side of the story too. That's a stand up move for a CEO. Well I guess this thread is done finally. Been a doosie...

Yeah, seriously, let's move on until we see the BOOM, or as we know now, a "joke". Not laughing when trashing a American company! OP, shooting a 223 and a 308 for comparison to a 300 win mag is like chewing on a ice cream cone vs a frozen tootsie roll. I can shoot a 223 and a 308 all week, a 300 winny is just a little-ENORMOUSLY different. I'd love to have some trigger time with it. I don't want to be rude, but after looking at the groups shot by Bergara and the Smith, I'd say YOU have a issue shooting a 300 Winny or a heavy recoiling rifle. I still don't think you've posted a neutral trigger man on your side. Time to end this thread and move on. Out. Rain in the desert and my place is getting ******* blown to ****. Have someone else shoot the **** out of it. Out

I would jump on this offer and let him develop the load you can always work on another load but you will have one dependable one to go back to and you will know the gun will shoot so any issues will be with you

I would end up shooting it anyway to make sure it shoots small. The 300wsm is pretty easy to get to shoot. One of the widest tuning nodes going in any cartridge for sure. My 300wsm 1000 yard gun shoots in a node about 7 tenths wide. Speed changes less than 10fps over a 7 tenths spread. I don't have any other cartridges with nodes that big. The op likes Berger's so I would do a 210hunting vld on about 61 grains of h4350. This is a very popular 1000 yard load that just hammers and stays in tune. I'm at 61.2 in mine and getting 2880. Be a little slower in a hunting barrel length. Sure you can go faster with other powders but do you really need to.

I guess we'll never know on this one. Bergara said they don't know what the problem was but after they recut the crown and the chamber with their precision line of tools the 3 three round groups they shot were from .4-.9 MOA. Same barrel and everything coming back.

I'm guessing my fire formed brass will be close enough to not resize everything? Wouldn't cutting a chamber already to spec larger make it less precise?

Sorry to bump an old thread but my HMR 6.5 PRC is at Bergara and failed their accuracy test. I was told they are going to "re-cut the chamber" and test it again this Wednesday. I'm an experienced shooter and eliminated all variables and Bergara confirmed something is wrong with the rifle. Fingers crossed it comes back able to hold a 5 shot group. I was getting fliers 1.5-2" off the group.

Oh man I just read several pages of this thread. Looks like a thread that's better off left back in history.
It really is NOT best left in history. Issues with these rifles are very common. In the States they may deal with the issues effectively but in Canada, if you get a bad gun, you are pretty much fukaded. The service absolutely sucks. For a higher end gun they are no where near the accuracy, consistency or quality of other guns in the same price range. I base this on quite a few different guns.
