Is 2.990" OACL for 6.5x284 w/140-142 grain pills too short for good potential?

Yes, another 6.5x284 question.

I really would really like to try the 6.5x284 but I am not sure if being limited to 26-27" of barrel and loading 140 class bullets to 2.990" MAXIMUM is worth enough to go that route. I know most guys here run these on long actions with 30+ inch barrels to capitalize on it's potential.

It is noteworthy that I dont require or need or want 3000+ FPS either. I would be happy with 2850 and 2900-2950 would make me MORE than happy. I am not interested in 120-130 class bullets either.

My 308 barrel is cooked. I will be joining the dark side. It will be official when my new .264 Lilja 8 twist barrel arrives next week. I have been informed that they will ship it out the 27th.

I have a Wyatt's box magazine in my 700 short action which I run 208 grain AMAXs out of at 2.990" without any feed/extraction isses at all and will be limited to 26-27" of barrel measured from the bolt face. Just trying to figure out if this configuration will get me where I want to be.

Thanks again!

Regards,

M

My first one was on a 700 SA with a 26" Hart Barrel. A loaded 142 SMK 10 thou off measured 2.940" It was a great shooter. I ran it @ 2850 fps and could have pushed it harder, the accuracy came in at that speed, with 4831 or R-22. With some of the new powders today I dont think you will have any trouble with 2900+

Top. 6.5 creed with 140vld,
Middle. 6.5-284 with 140 vld
Bottom 6-284 with 105 amax,
I don't think you will have a problem, the 260rem,6.5CM or 6.5x47 wil get you in the mid 2800's fps,but if you want to hit the 2900's the 284 case is the way to go and at 2.990" you will have enough powder room to do it! Let us know how your build goes,Merry Christmas.
