IMR 7977 for 7mm-08 A.I. ?

Ya- I figured, I offered up half of my stash on the classifieds to trade for some more appropriate powder
Thanks for running the powder though

Should have mentioned I'm planning on running 140gr HH''s and or 150 eldx's if and when I can find them
When I had my ridgeline in 7-08 I ran RL17 with 150 eldx at 2890 FPS and it was one of the most accurate guns I've owned to date.
I think 7977 is to slow for the 7-08.

@Trm82
That is one nice Whitetail in your avatar
Yowzers👍
Have you ever had a problem with temp stability with RL17
Thanks and no I've never had a problem with RL17 and stability problems and I've used a ton of it in numerous wsm's ,7-08 and a few other calibers with no issues.
I don't go shooting when it's much past about 68F (had to convert that from Canada ) haha
I've used it in extreme cold up to about 68 F and it's never gave me any issues.

At the risk of hijacking the thread; does anyone have an idea how IMR 7828 would do in the 7-08AI with heavier convebtional bullets? I have an 8lb jug.

I ran IMR 7828 with a 180 ELDM in QL and its pretty much the same story as IMR 7977. When selecting powders, I look for one that can get to pressure max in the 95 to 100% density range. Many of my loads are compressed, but in my rifles, I find that I get reduced brass life above 107 or 108% load density. When a load reaches that point and is not meeting my velocity expectations, I switch to a faster burning powder. A ran a quick search and found that IMR 4064, IMR 4451, H414, H380 and Varget fall within that range. QL shows H2O capacity of 58.3 grains. I find the database numbers generally on the low side and your actual capacity will affect pressure. COAL is usually on the short side as well. In most of my loads, using actual case capacity and COAL reduce projected pressure by around 2000 psi resulting in a reduced load density.

I will have to look a bit to find a powder that has as low an es/sd as Varget in any .308 based cartridge I have owned. powder supply is the only reason this thread was created.
I have a ladder test ready to go in 4831sc, probably gonna have to pull bullets. 🤠

7977 just wont work, too slow

For the original 7mm-08 and AI version, powders like RL17, Varget, CFE223, Big game and IMR-4451 will work great with the 120gr, 139gr and 140gr bullets.

For the heavier ones ranging from 150gr to 168gr, IMR-4451, H4350, RL16, RL17 will work best.

I've got a couple 7-08ai, and those slower powders just aren't going to get you there. I've had really good luck with IMR4451, IMR4166, Varget and VV555. I like the Varget burn rate range for absolute hammers, and the 4350 range for conventional or hammer hunters.

What was your experience with the IMR4451 and VV555 ?
Used both for 150 scenars, and both shoot really well. I believe I was a touch faster with the 555. I also tried them with the 140 absolute hammer, and got really good groups, but less speed than the Varget burn rate. I bet either would work great with the 143 Hammer Hunter.
