I'm pretty new to anything over 1000 yards. I am starting off with a Remington 700 Sendero in 300 RUM. That being said, I have determined that I want a ffp optic with mrad reticle and turrets.

Options:
Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP EBR-2C reticle which has 19 mrad max verticle adj
Burris XTR II 4-20x50 FFP Horus H591 reticle which has 26.2 mrad max vert adj

I'm assuming this means 9.5mils up and down for a total of 19, or 13.1 up and down for a total of 26.2mils depending on scope?

The load data with a 250yd zero gives me drops(in mils) of:
1.6 @ 500
3.6 @ 750
6.4 @ 1000
10.2 @ 1250
15.4 @ 1500
22.5 @ 1750
33.1 @ 2000 ---- 31.5 mrad with 500yd zero

A 20 moa mount would give me 5.818 mils additional elevation if this math is correct. So my question remains how do I come up with a scope and mount combo to shoot to 1 mile or more? I've never had to worry about limitations of elevation before.

I think your math is right. At what point does the bullet begin to go transonic? That is about 1400 fps?

Hey there,

With those two scopes you will probably need more than a 40 moa cant base to be able to dial all the way to 2000 yards , and with the vortex you won't be able to zero at 250 yards... If you stick with the 20 moa base and either of those scopes you can dial until u run out of adjustment and use the reticle to hold over the rest of the way...
If my mental math is right you should be able to dial the Burris to 1750 from 250yards with a 40 moa base...
Keep in mind that putting a lot of cant in your base will require you to zero your scope at the bottom of your adjustment and put you closer to the edge of lenses and further from the centre of the optics. I found when I did this with my pst it affected the optical clarity a bit, also got shadowing from the sunshade in the field of view when zeroed, it goes away when dialing up into the centre of adjustment when shooting at distance. Also in some scopes at the extreme ends of verticle adjustment you might find your windage adjustment is limited...

I'm just using a ballistics calculator on the Hornady site for a 180gr SST at 3200 fps and a BC of 480. Even with the Cutting Edge 182gr with a BC 600, I drop under 1400 at about 1350 yards.

Is a 300 RUM not capable of such ranges?

Ok...you want to go out and shoot into four digit ranges. The FIRST thing you do is trash your ammo and load up something else. There are FAR better choices out there than the 180 SST!! The Berger 215 and 230's come to mind.....especialy out of a RUM!!!

I think your data is off. I have less drop then that at 1000 with my ultra mag with a 100 yard zero, its 6.1 mils for me. and thats with a 230 gr berger.

I have no intentions of shooting anything but solid copper for long range. The SST was just a bullet I had BC data in front of me for. I plan to use Berger or Cutting Edge. As of right now I have no loaded ammo, nor the loading equipment for this particular caliber. I'm just trying to figure out what to top off the gun with to get it right the first time.
