Hunting on bureau of land management lands

that program seems nice, but its very expensive! is there a cheaper alternative?
No. The alternative is to print a map and do a bunch of research and hand write and you access points and property boundaries or maybe calling blm to see if they have maps of the intended area and if they have property boundaries and public access points and again try to transcribe it on said map.

Is there an alternative app to on-x ?

And finally:

Here you can create your own paper maps and have them printed. Honestly, all are about the same price. Competition in the market, etc...

I prefer OnX because they were the first, seem to have the most mature data, and update processes and they are a local business based here in Missoula.

Thanks everyone for the guidance & suggestions. Next time I've a problem with BLM/Federal land access I'll contact the BLM office and the local law enforcement. I know the access rules and follow them, and don't knowingly trespass. Being bullied off public land is not acceptable; My GPS is accurate and the BLM land shows plainly next time I'll be prepared.

My uncle had a rancher tell him the same thing, but he had his GPS with landowner info. The land clearly showed it was blm. He said he called the sherrif who ended up cutting the chain and padlock off the fence hahaha

It has been a few years since we used to hunt Montana, but the rancher could not deny access to public as long as you did not trespass to get there. If you hunt block management land (leased for hunting by the state) and there is even one of the rancher's cows on it, no bueno. Never agreed with it as the ranchers get paid to allow hunting, then turn their stock in. They get paid for nothing. Happens a LOT.

Years ago in CO (Kalifornia East), I came across posted signs on what I knew to be public land. Some "orange pelt" tried to run me off but my Maps and GPS dissuaded him.

OnX and the local Game wardens number will usually solve issues quickly. BLM is public lands, renting the grazing does not mean ownership BUT you had dang well know where your at. I've been on both sides of this, I've watched ******* wailing away at elk in the middle of cattle and hitting cows, both parties have rights to utilize the land and there needs to be respect both ways, I understand the over reaction if they have cows in there, if not then that's another story!!

watch the "boundaries" on the on-x maps-- not all lot lines are accurate, the "lot lines" around my property are off by a couple hundred feet on the on-x app

here is the blm link for Montana https://www.blm.gov/media/public-room/montana-dakotas

Unless specifically prohibited, public lands managed by the BLM are open to hunting. Always check with your local BLM office in the region you plan to visit to inquire about closures, restrictions and safety tips before you plan your trip. It is extremely important to hunt only on lands where it is legally allowed.
