I am planning on a hunt, I expect the shot to reach 1000 meters, and I currently own the following calibers in 26 inch barrels. Game is mule deer. What to use????

300RUM
300WM
338WM
3006
308
35 Whelen 24 inch barrel
7.62x54R 29 inch barrel
6.5x55 29 inch barrel
50BMG 22 inch barrel
I have only shot these out to 600 meters do to the range limitation here on base; I will go down to Quantico soon to gather Dope for the rifle I use. I have shot the 308 out to 1000 meters.

Hello fmsniper,

If it were me I would be torn between what was powerfull (300 RUM) and what I was most familiar with. If you say you have fired the 308 to 1k I would probably go with that provided I had a suitable load for it. You have a 26" BBL so you can get good velocities accuratley with it. I know from first had that its hard to get bullets like the SMK up fast enought to perform well on game to 1k. A 155 SMK or 178 AMAX might do much better than a 168 or 175, I know for sure the 190 wont expand on a deer fired from a 308 at that range. The 155 might, the 178 most likely will but dont know. However accuracy is most important. I would go with what you shoot the best with.

Remember also if you have a tight twist, like a 1-10 and shoot loads like a 155 or 175 or 178, these will perform better than expected upon impact vs a longer bullet. The faster you spin a bullet more than neccessary, the more it will break up.

Hope that helps a little

The 35 came out great, I used it in Michagan for deer this year as well as my 6.5, Thanks for the rifle.

if it were me i'd use the 300wm, I never tried the 300rum yet but I love my 300 win mag. and it has enough energy and accuracy for big mullies at a distance ..... save the 50bmg for Elk

wanted to use my 50 for Elk this year but ended up using my trusty 300 win mag

my $.02

It's a no brainer for me. I'd take the 300 RUM and Kill the deer or an elk at 1000 meters "plus".

You said you were going to Quantico for data and practice.

The 300 Win Mag will do it to but, not with as much athority as the 300 RUM will.

Have a good hunt.

Hello, fmsniper.
Long time no hear from.

How's that 1937 VZ24 Mauser that your 35 Whelen barrel is screwed into? That was a beautiful rifle that you made. After I sold it to you, I bought a Savage Model 12FVSS, varmint rifle in .270 WSM with a 26" SS barrel, with the new AccuTrigger. Love it.

The 300RUM does well out to 600 with 10 power IOR Tactical it is a SAVAGE 116 SAK wi/ brake

The 300 RUM will do it to the yardage/meters you plan on hunting and much further, "if" the correct bullet is used.

The poster before this one has gone to 600 meters but in reality, that cartridge is good for double that distance very easily even though your barrel is a tad short.

You won't get the velocity I get with my Tomahawk which is just the 300 RUM slightly improved.

Even at that, the 300 RUM would be my pick.
You may want to try the 210 Berger bullet, or the 200 and 220 Sierra MK.

Good hunting.

1000 meters animal hunting -can't be done with insufficient velocity and poor accuracy. An accurate 300 RUM with those heavy bullet mentioned potentially can get it done.

I shoot a 300 RUM so am a little partial. I do think it would give you a little advantage over the others mentioned because of the high velocity and potential for high b.c. bullets. Takes some of the guesswork out and packs plenty of whallop at a distance. If your rifle will shoot them, you might try some 210 bergers. I shoot my own bullets with very high b.c and have dropped several elk at 1000 yds.......Rich

IMO, the 308 is not near enough rifle for a 1000 yd shot on a mullie... unless you just want to punch a pencil hole in its side. I also belive the 300 WM comes a little short of a good 1K deer killer, as does the 338 WM, 300 WSM, 7RM, 7WSM, etc., simply because none of these will deliver a bullet 1K down range with the velocity required for expansion. There may be 1 or 2 bullets you could use that expand at lower velocities like the A-Max.

By far the best cartridge on your list is the 300 RUM. It will get you a little beyond 1K with most expanding hunting bullets with a good BC.

210vld going 2950fps out of the 300 RUM

At sea level, I would feel safe about the 210vld expanding up to right at 900 meters as max range for elk hunting(still retain 1700fps).

900 Meter = 984 yards.

8000ft above sea level is a whole new level, Max range would be just under 1200 meters (1700fps mark).

Pesky ol' air density effects...

A 300 RUM should easily be able to push a 210 VLD @ 3100-3150 fps. The Berger VLDs are advertised to expand down to 1800 fps. @ 3000 ft elev, the 210 out of a 300 RUM should be a 1K plus cartridge, almost to 1100 yds.
