How to stop alerts?

I took a few months off from the internet. I got back on a few days ago, and I cannot stop the alerts showing up. I get over 1000 notices shortly after I mark them all read. They go from 0 to over 1000 in one refresh or page change. I also have unchecked and ignored every forum I get the alerts from and they dont stop. I also unmarked everything in my preferences with the alerts still coming. Any help is appreciated.
