I have become a huge fan of the 260 rem over the last few years .I have 264 win mag rifles but they are almost three pounds heavier and kick way too much for the 200 fps extra I can get out of the 260 rem .I have three 260 rifles and want another one .Mine rifles all have 22 inch barrels but they are very accurate .I am thinking that if the next one has a 26 inch barrel it will be close to my 24 inch 264 win mag rifles .I like that I can make my brass from 308 or 243 .I want a new longer barrel 260 maybe 26 or 27 inches .I made alot of kids smile that could not yet shoot a 270 win but loved shooting the 260 rem .I think this will be my new deer cartridge for deer as long as I hunt .I have two savage 260s and a ar10 in 260 .I was wondering if the 4 or five extra inches of barrel is worth dragging through the woods to hunt open fields and clear cuts .I know there are alot of 260 shooters on here .

The 260 is also a favorite on mine I have a 26" its been a great preforming rifle. We shoot a lot out to 1300 as well as a little 1760 yards the bullet splash on the plate at 1760 is less noticeable with a spotter the flashers work well at that point.
I have been using the 139 gr. Scenars forever they just shot well. When I had a Brux barrel I was floating in the 2835 fps range with my accuracy node, after changing out the barrel to a Bartlein I now float right at 2800 fps.

I recently picked up some new production 135 gr. JLKs in which the BC is better and the bullets are match grade I'm curious to see what the improvement in BC and the extra speed I pick up is going to do over the Lapua 139 gr. Scenars that I've been using it could be interesting.

I shoot both a .260 AI and a .264 win mag. If your within 200 fps with a standard 22" barreled .260, than your either REALLY overloading your .260 or really underloading your .264 wm. In my .260AI with a 29" barrel, using Reloder 26, I shoot the 156 EOL at 2940 fps, pressure signs appeared at 2980-3000, and that is a HBN coated bullet, out of an ackley improved .260, with a 29" barrel. The 26" .264 wm shoots the same bullet at 3225 with first initial signs of pressure, and will comfortably run at 3175 using Retumbo. All I'm saying, is that I am guessing there is some more velocity on the table for the .264 wm.

But I have used the 140 VLD out of my .260AI, going 2930 fps with h4831sc, and 3070 using rl26, and taken pronghorn to elk out to over 900 yards. I have also used the 147 eld-m, which I don't recommend at all, and I have used the 156 EOL, which worked fantastic this year on some 14 animals we used them on, again from pronghorn to elk. If my max range was only 500 or so, I would consider Hammer bullets. In a standard 26" .260, with RL26 you may be able to get the 156 up to 2700-2750 or so, take off around 100 fps for most other powders. The 140's with rl26 may break 2900-2950, again, minus 100 fps for most other powders. These are what I would think would be max numbers, your best load would be under somewhat more than likely.

I built my self a 260 AI because it will push the 130 6.5 grain bullets over 3,000 ft/sec with out max pressure. Mine is in a un-braked 26" barrel. It will also push the 120 grain over 3100 ft/sec. I like both bullet weights for deer and the fact that no tracking is involved. This rifle is built on a model 788 Remington action for the strength and center feed Mag.

Nothing wrong with the regular 260 rem, I just wanted to get the most out of the case life and boost the velocity without excessive pressure.

Like you I liked the fact that brass could be made from the 308, 7/08 and the 243 cases. Now that Lapua is making brass for it, I bought some to have the correct head stamp on the brass.

My experiences with these cases (308 based) is that it seems they work well with 18 to 26" barrels and any more length, the velocity gains are very small.

This cartridge is very capable for deer size game beyond 6 or 700 yards and targets well beyond 1000 yards.

One other thing to add, Peterson small rifle primer brass is excellent, and I have no issues lighting a full load of slow rl26 in sub zero temps with BR-4 pri.ers, however my current 156 load prefers cci 450's. But small rifle primer pockets in this case make it last forever. I got over 10 loads out of Lapua large rifle primer brass, I have no doubt this Peterson brass will outlast the rest of the barrel life and likely into the next one a good amount. The fact that good brass like that last so long makes the idea of fireforming not so bad, plus, on my lapua brass, I only trimmed it twice in over 10 fireings. I'm at 4 fireings with the Peterson, and still don't need to trim.

I had a 26" .260 Rem for years. Pushed a 140 HVLD @ 2910fps over H4350. Great deer rifle.

My daughter shoots a 6.5SLR, and runs a 22" pushing a 130 AR Hyb at 2901 (or 2925 suppressed). She has taken some great game animals with it, and shoots it well past 1000 during the off season.

I do not believe you will be close to .264WM speeds no matter what length barrel you run. There is not replacement for displacement. The .264WM just has too much more case capacity to catch with a .260.

if you want to get close to the 264win. put together a 6.5-280 ackley 26 inch tube an easy neck down on the brass and you are in buisness

I have had good success with the following in my 6.5s: Berger 140 ELD Hunting, Nosler 142 ABLR and Hornady 140 ELD Match. My first 6.5, which I still have, is 260 Rem with a 26" barrel. Unless one is hunting in thick woods, I think a 26" barrel, or even longer depending on what round (.264 WM, 26 Nosler) and receiver (Desert Tech, Blaser), you might be using.

I shoot a 260 in our clubs 600 yard group! I shoot a Remington 700 with a McMillan stock jaeger trigger at less than 1 lb and a heavy douglas barrel ! I shoot the 140 grain berger vld match with h4350 and match primers and lapua brass
