How long is too long?

A barrel block just changes the constraint from one long single ended column to two shorter single ended columns. If the barrel block butts against the receiver, that column is going to be much more stiff than the muzzle and. If you push the block toward the muzzle, the muzzle end is going to get stiffer faster than the receiver end loses stiffness until the barrel block gets near the middle.

So you could make it stiffer and probably lose some weight at the same time.
