Help: New shooter looking for decent rifle

Most of the guns that have been discussed are more than adequate for your purposes. The Savage 111LRH is a fine choice. If recoil is a concern, don't go beyond the 7mm RM. It's plenty of gun for anything in North America at some given distance.

If you get really hooked on LRH and need to shoot moose and bears at 1500 yds, then the cost of another rifle will only be a fraction of your budget.

What good is a rifle if you don't enjoy shooting it? ...except for collectables

I was looking at a table of recoil for different bullets (I'm just rounding the numbers off for ease) the difference between the 7mm and the 300 mag was about 5 ft lbs and the difference between the 300 mag and the .308 was about 10 ft lbs. So somehow I'd have to bring down the recoil about 10 ft lbs, with weight and recoil pads and muzzle brakes, you guys think it possible? if so how? the weight of the scope/ rings alone should drop it about 4 ft lbs, I don't know what the muzzle brake and the recoil pad will do, so for the sake of argument lets say that they do nothing... any ideas how to up the weight more? or reduce recoil without spending a small fortune at the smith's or buying a new stock.
PS my friends convinced me to go with the 300 magnum, but I'm only going to if i can get the math right (I can't legaly shoot a gun right now as I don't have my license so I have to shoot my friends, but they have neither a LRH or a 300 magnum, hence needing the math, I can't actually get a real feel for it)

Savage FCNS. Accutrigger, Accustock, great action.

If you don't reload your own ammo choose a NATO caliber like .308 so you can get ammo for good prices.

If you do handload I would consider 270 WSM, 300WSM, or 300 Win Mag.

I have a FCNS in 270 WSM and love it.

Friend of mine purchased the FCNS in 308 with heavy ribbed barrel and muzzle break, it's a great rifle.

I personally shoot the Remington 700 in 308. But I glass bedded it, re-set the trigger at 2.5lbs and handload my own ammo. It shoots the same groups as the $4000.00 rifles. pics below

Spdrman, I don't pledge allegiance to any company either, but I'm looking at the best gun I can buy for less than 1k and can shoot better than I so I can grow into it. and from what I've read that is savage. As for felt recoil you have a good 5" and 35lbs on me so you're probably feeling a little less recoil than I would, emphasis on the little. That's where my recoil related quarries come from, but again I know nothing (schultz!) so I defer to your unbounding knowledge in this regards. sorry if I'm sounding really dependant.

I'm a big guy, but my 12 year old sister in law can easily handle my .300 win mag. A bipod, and muzzle break really does a lot to take away recoil.

Also consider the .338's such as the 338 win and rum, can get the guns on the cheapish. Components and ammo may be a bit much though. Also 30-06 or the plain old .308 are readily available both for reloading and on the shelf.

I am in the boat not of gathering all the reloading gear I have a single stage and all the goodies for my win mag but I want a progressive to feed my mini 14 and pistols. But that is a lot of $$$ so I have been hitting garage sales and looking for used stuff online. I am squirling away money and if a Dillon progressive press presents it self over the winter ill be all over it.

Oh over on sniper central in their gear shop there is a sling called the tactical innovations sling, it is the same one now being issued for the m-24 sniper rifle. It is the best sling on the market period! Takes some training and getting used to but I can now shoot my win mag standing and that saying a lot it is a heavy pig. A good sling does a lot for your accuracy and soaking up a bit of recoil. Slings IMO are one of the most over looked components in a field craft rifle.
