Heavier or lighter?

I have a .300 win mag and I want to start working up a load for Elk out to 800 yards. I was looking at 180 grain bullets but my buddy told me I should look at heavier bullets? I was thinking more velocity=better. Whats the best bullet for longer range. How about brands?

190 or 200 gr Sierra MK in the 300 Win mag worked for me.
Both have a higher BC then the 180 and will perform better then the 180 at 800 yards.

Even the 210 berger or JLK or 220 MK will work fantastic.

I would say the 190's or 200's if you going to 500...

I see that alot of guys here are using the Nosler Accubond Bullet ( 200 grs ) I have to say I like them as well... B.C. of .588 should work really well out of your Win Mag.

We recently did some drop-chart shooting and the 200 Nosler Accubond stayed exactly with the 200 Sierra Match King out to 1000 yards from a new Savage laminated stock Accutrigger rifle. Matter of fact they shot very well, stayed with the MK's for accuracy also in that particular rifle. Powder used was Western Powders Magnum, very accurate load.

Drops looked like this:
200 zero +1.00
300 zero +3.00
400 zero +5.75
500 zero +8.25
600 zero +10.50
700 zero +13.00
800 zero +16.25
900 zero +19.00
1000 zero +22.0

Light bullets have lower BC which means at LR, they slow down more and get bounced around by the wind. The heavies will also carry more momentum at the target which will help both expansion and penetration. You no longer have vel to do the work.

Go with the bullets already listed and you find that once you go past 500yds, there is no comparison to the lighter bullets.

I shoot a 30Gibbs with 165gr SST bullets at 2950fps. Up to 600yds, it performs quite well but gets blown around in any kind of wind beyond that.

Buddy shoots a 280 w/168gr MK. Lower muzzle vel but higher BC. He shoots through conditions that drive me nuts. Both rifles are 1/3MOA rifles.
