Headspace Marlin 30-30 Lever

I have a Lee Breech Lock Challenger but have a question about headspace. I bought a L.E Wilson Headspace Case Gage and all my fired cases were below the SAAMI minimum specs, so I called Wilson and talked to a tech and he explained that if my 30-30 case are below the minimum on their case gage I should adjust the die to bring it between minimum and maximum, however, Lee dies do not have a fine adjustment. The tech recommended that I play with the adjustment and a few cases until I get the adjustment in between max and min, which I did and 7 cases later it was right on the money. How critical is headspace on a Marlin 30-30 Lever. I have read so many different views and opinions. Thanks for any advice.
