Hammer Hunter Load Data, (See page 1, Post 8)

"Splat Factor"

There's been a lot written about the "splat factor" of various Hammer bullets here and in the Hammer Forum. This got started with the experiments done on multiple animal species in Australia. Great stuff! (Hammered Downunder)
Well, not to be outdone, we also have some "splat factor" here in the States!
On Tuesday afternoon I was working on loads for my 6.5 Sherman Max (between rain showers). As luck would have it, a Huge horsefly lit on my target. I thought, this will never happen again - why not ?!?
There has also been quite a bit of discussion on best stability factor (2 or more preferred) for reliable penetration and no tumbling while the bullet travels through tissue and bone. Velocity and twist have been discussed at great length.
Well, it appears that a horsefly is no match for an 85gr Hammer Hunter at 3952 fps. Note also that the "splat" is nicely round, indicating a centered hit and no tumbling as it penetrated bone, hide and tissue!
What'ya think?
G
You should play with seating depth then take it out to 1400 to run a ladder test and verify your bc. You need a sample of at least 50 to ensure its repeatable.

Well, that one was certainly on the money!! Great shooting, George!

Just a short note.
I goofed on the 7/22 posting of load data for the Hammers. I posted the Absolute spreadsheet on this thread.
One of our observant members caught my goof and alerted me. I just corrected my error.
Thanks for helping keep me straight! This stuff is getting massive. Thanks to all for your good work!
George

No Sir, Thank You for all of your hard work

243 Savage Storm
22" bbl 1-9.25 twist
2.710" coal
Cci 250 primers
80gr hammer hunter
Hornady brass
49gr rl 26 @ 3400 fps
~1" groups

I tried a few things to tighten this up but not real luck (various charges, neck tension, crimps etc). The only thing left is to seat deeper and with my luck this would be one of the few times that adjusting seating depth would help hammers!

Same load shoots 80gr ttsx into .5-.7" consistently for what that's worth.

I have some additional ladder data for the hammers with imr 7828ssc, rl16 & 6.5 staball if it would help anyone.
I would like to see your data on Staball 6.5 as I have a lot of it. Works great in my 65CM AR w/ 130 OTMs.

Standard caveat: start low work up. There seemed to be some headroom beyond this ladder but RL26 was so far over this that I never went any further after I scored a 8lb keg of it back in Nov.

Thanks, I would be ashamed to tell you how much 26 I have, but was thinking a faster powder would be better in the .243. I'm going to have to make sure I don't have a little 16 hidden in my stock
I guess 26 is magic. 26 & h1000 are what I use in my 65 PRC & 300 WM. The 26 gives about + 150 fps in both

Mr Taylor ya ready for another one to add to the the Hammer Hunter Data sheet?

RL26 is all kinds of magic. I know some folks have had luck pushing the 80gr HH's over 3500 (maybe even over 3600) with RL26, but I don't know the details of those loads and I was on the edge of what my soft hornady brass could handle at 3400+.

I was pushing 150 partitions in excess of 3000fps with RL26 out of my 22" 270 win before switching to the 133 SH's in that gun.

Shot some groups today out of my 300 Norma. I wanted more once fired brass and I was curious what my rifle would do with "my factory loads" before I shot a group or 2 with sized uniform brass so the groups I shot today is all with virgin lapua brass with no case prep. I wanted to revisit pressure to confirm my initial findings just out of curiosity so I shot 1 round at 88.5gr of retumbo and was very close to a pierced primer lol never seen a primer get a titty.

not sure exactly what order the pictures will show up as so I tried to make sure you could see the charge rate on each case in the pics. The pic of the 5 shot group was virgin lapua case-no prep, 88.0gr of retumbo, 199HH, cci lrm, bullet seated 20thou off lands. It's nothing crazy, 3 shots in 1 hole were nice but the other 2 shots fubar'd (.72moa @ 100 yards). I think once I get these cases bumped .002 back, uniform neck tension, etc it should tighten up. I was just curious what this rifle would do with my equivalent of "factory loads".

Sounds like I can't go wrong giving 26 a try in my .243. Appreciate you'll posting results. I'll post mine after I try. May be a few days. I looked for 16 & only found about 1/2 a can and the humidity levels could have changed enough to make it behave differently

Ok, guys, I need a little advice. I'm working on a load for my Remington Semdero 7 RUM. Here are the specs:

143g hammer hunter
Virgin ADG brass
Federal 215m primers
N570 powder
3.850" COAL

Steve recommended I start at 94 grains, so I did and used that to zero my scope. Then I attached the magnetospeed and shot in 1 grain increments looking for pressure. Here's the specs of my range session.

93° with calm winds
All shots were fired at 100 yards with magnetospeed attached

95 grains - 3338 FPS
96 grains - 3385 FPS
97 grains - 3398 FPS
98 grains - 3463 FPS
99 grains - 3476 FPS
100 grains - 3548 FPS
101 grains - 3617 FPS
102 grains - 3653 FPS
103 grains - 3714 FPS

I still haven't found really good signs of pressure. There's absolutely no stiff bolt lift or no ejector marks on the brass. The only thing I'm seeing is slightly flattened and cratered primers, but all my Remington 700s have cratered primers. I stopped at 103 grains because I ran out of daylight. But also because I'm already 233 FPS over book max for a 140 grain nosler bullet, so I'm getting a little nervous. Where do y'all suggest I go from here? Should I keep increasing in 1 grain increments until I find definitive signs of pressure? Or should I just back down to 101 or 102 grains and shoot for groups? I'm just not sure what to do.
