Like the title says I'm looking for some insite on the hammer bullets in 308 win and 30-06 I've been looking at buying some for awhile and have been talking back and forth with Steve and now that sadly deer season is over here in NC I want to start working up good loads for next season.i want to know what people have on game experience with the hammer hunters or shock hammers in 308 and 30-06 and what were some good loads for them and what grain weights worked best thanks

Steve bores the holes a little deeper for quicker expansion on some of the 174g (deadblows) for our small whitetail. Hope they open good especially at longer ranges. I started the 300 win mag load today. I just need to shoot more groups to confirm consistency. I also started finding pressure on the 300 short mag. It will be a bit but that short barreled 308 is next. Sorry I don't have more information just getting started. I hope to try some out before season goes out

Thanks

Buck

I am a half step ahead of you.

I bought the 152 HH for the .308 and the 181HH for the .300WM. Thought about the absolute hammers but that requires new powder choices and I have chased powder enough to have what I need. FWIW I like how these weights fit in or intrude into the powder/neck area. I just don't see the logic of going too heavy and losing case volume. Solids punch above their weight class too...

No data yet to directly answer your question but if Steve is advising you your golden!

I'm shooting the 152 hammers in my 308 and 300 wsm. In the 308 I'm using varget and getting 2850 fps, very accurate in my Tikka. I didn't have enough tags last year to take the 308 out but I did kill a cow elk with the 300 wsm. With RL 16 the 152 is going 3350 fps, also very accurate and easily killed the cow. Plan to mule deer hunt with the 308 this coming fall. I have no doubt the 308 with the 152 will work great.

I'm reloading the 152 HH in my 20" barreled 308. 46 grains of Varget gets me 2697 fps which I used to kill a bear with this year. Accuracy is stellar!! Performance was pass thru at 207 yds. Took out the lungs but the bear still ran 100 yds before dying in deep cover. 300 win mag I'm using 181 HH. 80 grains of Ramshot Magnum shoots one hole 5-shot groups at 0.68" for 100 yds. My Dad shot an elk this year at 187 yds double lungs. Blew out lung tissue on the ground and elk died about 25 yds from the shot. I'm a little disappointed with the velocity in my 308. Was hoping for high 2700's. Maybe my lot of Varget is old. Idk.

How long is the barrel on your Tikka and how many grains of Varget are you using? I'm getting pretty low velo in my 20" barrel Rem 700. Great accuracy but 45.5 grains got me 2637 fps avg and 46 grains has me almost 2700. Seems slow. Idk. Thanks for your help.

22" barrel on the Tikka. 45.5 grs of varget is what I'm using. 210m primers, Lapua brass. Hodgdons shows 46.5 as max with a 150 gr bullet and varget in a 24" barrel making 2914 and 2937. From my experience hammers run faster with the same powder charge as lead core bullets and can usually take a touch more powder before pressure

Yes, that's what I read and my experience with Hammers too. Not sure why I'm 250 fps slower with 4 inches less barrel. I should be closer to 120 fps slower max. My Varget must be too old. I'm gonna open a new can and check it again.
